Dear Tim,
Thank you for your last letter. I was glad to hear from you. I’m sorry for haven’t been writing you for a long time. I was preparing for my exams.
As for Russia, there are lots of different holidays, such as New Year, Christmas, Country Defendant’s Day*, International women’s Day and so on. For example, every year on the 31 of December my mum cooks delicious meals, my daddy and I decorate our Christmas tree. At 10 pm we gather together and at five minutes before New Year everybody listen to President’s speech. Then we wish each other great year and give presents.
By the way, where are you going to spend your summer holidays? What do you think about a trip to Russia? Will you spend holidays with your parents or with friends?
Anyway, I have to go now as I’m helping my Dad in the shop. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
Write back soon!
Best wishes,
Dima

My Favourite Holiday
My name is Alexandra, I’m thirteen years old. My favourite holiday is my birthday. On this day I get up early, but by that time my mother already cooks food for a festive table in the kitchen. In the morning my family and friends begin to give presents and congratulate me. My parents and younger brother always want me to remember this day for a long time that’s why they decorate the flat with many-coloured little balls.
On this day a lot of my friends and relations usually come to see me. When we all get together we sit down to table and begin to celebrate my birthday. Everybody has a good time dances and communicates with each other, the music plays loudly.
At the end of the holiday we turn off the lights and my father brings a big cake with candles. I must blow out the candles and make a wish. After that we have tea with a cake and then we dismiss the guests. I would like to celebrate my birthday every month because all our relations and friends can meet together on this day.
I grow up every year but my birthday always remains the most unforgettable holiday of the year.

Holidays have joyous feelings related to them. My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love this holiday because it comes in January, which is also my birth month. There are a lot of exciting things we do during Christmas. We start making preparations for Christmas early before the month starts.
This year, my friends and I made snowmen with snow outside our houses. My dad put up all the lights in the interior and exterior of the house. It was looking really bright and pretty. My mom made a lot of food, cakes, and snacks, and ate with our family. My cousins from Tatarstan came over to spend time with us.
Our whole group of family and friends ate and talked and laughed with each other, sitting cozily near the fireplace, with the Christmas tree towering over us. I had a lot of fun. It is one of my best experiences and I hope to feel it again.

Easter is the biggest festival of Christians. In Christianity it is believed that Jesus Christ rose again after three days of death. This festival is celebrated with great pomp in the entire Christian world to commemorate his resurrection.
Followers of Christianity believe that the Lord Jesus stayed with disciples and friends for forty days after his resurrection and finally went to heaven.
Easter is always celebrated on Sundays between March 22 and April 25 every year. It comes two days after Good Friday and on this day people go to church and lit candles.
Although many types of dishes are made on Easter day but Easter egg has its own special place in all these.
On the night before Easter, the elders of the house hide colourful and beautifully decorated eggs in their houses and then on Sunday morning children search and find these eggs.
Night awakening and other religious traditions are completed in all the churches on Easter Sunday. The next day, on Easter Monday, is a legal holiday in many countries with predominantly Christian traditions.

Winter Holidays
There are many different holidays in our calendar. We celebrate religious and public holidays, our birthdays and anniversaries. My favorite holidays are winter holidays.
When December comes I am the happiest person in the world. I wait for snow, do window shopping and prepare presents for my friends and family. Winter holidays are in the air. I think even people look happier during this period of time.
In the beginning of December we celebrate my granny’s birthday. All the family comes to wish her happiness and health. At this moment she is the happiest person in the world because all of us have dinner, talk and share memories.
In December 24 it’s (January 6) Kaliada (Christmas Eve). We cook a dinner with my mom and sister, decorate a Christmas tree and home. Sometime we invite our friends or relatives for dinner. But usually it’s a family evening. After dinner we can go to the cathedral and leave the presents under the Christmas tree.
Next morning it’s Christmas time. We wish each other merry christmas and go for a walk all together. This day all people want to spend with the family. Maybe that’s why it’s one of my favorite holidays.
The most exciting day comes at the end of the year. In December 31 we give presents to each other and celebrate New Year. It’s a fantastic time when we can say sorry to our friends and relatives, finish everything what has to be done and make new plans for the next year. Actually I start to do all these things in the beginning of winter.
In February 23 we celebrate Men’s day and wish to our dads, friends and boyfriends to be strong and to be our support.
I think there is something magical in winter holidays. I believe this is the time when our wishes can come true and we can meet new good friends.

Every nation has its own customs and long-lived traditions.

Holidays are especially rich in old traditions.
There are three types of holidays in different countries: state or public holidays, religious holidays and family holidays.

Such holidays unite people, make them feel proud of their nation.
For example, in my country there are state or public holidays such as Constitution Day, New Year’s Day, the International Women’s Day, May Day, Victory Day, Independence Day and others.
State organisations, banks and companies do not work on these days.

I think that some like holidays are in many other countries.
New Year’s Day is the major family holiday for many Russians. It is a national holiday in Russia, on which most businesses and public offices are closed. Schools and universi¬ties are closed too.
Religious holidays include Christmas, Easter and some others. There is also a pagan holiday – Shrovetide or Pancake Day.
Preparation for Christmas are always pleasant: buying gifts, sending Christmas cards and decorating Christmas tree with small, bright-colored lights. Churches hold a special Christmas services. Christmas starts in the morning with the smell of cookies, cakes, chocolate and cinnamon.
I like also to prepare for Easter with my family: we colour and decorate Easter eggs, cook Easter cakes and paskha, attend a church service.
Shrovetide is very fine holiday in Russia. It is the time to say goodbye to long cold Russian winter.
People cook and eat very many pancakes, go to city centre where there is a fair with folk concerts, outdoor traditional games and funs. In the end of this holiday people burn in effigy of winter.
Family holidays include birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other family celebrations. Different families have different traditions of celebrations.
My favourite family holiday is New Year’s Day. A week before the celebration we decorate a New Year tree with colourful glass balls and toys. My family usually has the New Year dinner. When the clock strikes midnight, we give each other presents. Later, we watch TV and relax and go outside to watch fireworks.
Another celebration which I like is my birthday.
Usually my friends and I get together, have a party either at my flat or in a cafe and then go’ for a walk. I like getting presents and having fun.
I think that holidays and traditions are important because they connect people and give them an opportunity to have fun and enjoy themselves.

Russian Holidays and Traditions
There are lots of holidays and celebrations Russia both national and foreign. Even though many Russians celebrate world holidays, such as St.Valentine’s Day, April Fools, Halloween and others, there are a number of purely Russian national holidays, which are celebrated only in Russia. These holidays emphasize the spirit of nation and support folk traditions.
One of the most interesting holidays in Russia takes place at the end of February to celebrate the end of winter. The holiday lasts for a week which is known as a Shrovetide. In Russia this holiday is called “Maslennitsa”. People traditionally eat lots of pancakes on this holiday and burn the scarecrow saying farewell to winter snow.
Another traditionally Russian celebration takes place on January 7th, which is an Orthodox Christmas. People visit their relatives on this day carrying rice pudding with raisins, which is called “kutya”. Many young and single girls try to read their fortune on the night of 6th and 7th January.
Russian weddings are also very joyous events and they differ a lot from other countries. There is a special person on Russian weddings called “tamada” who entertains the guests by various toasts and games.
Every June many Russians celebrate the holiday called “The night of Ivan Kupala”. People traditionally weave the wreaths from wildflowers, make the bonfires and swim in lakes on the night of this day.

My favourite holiday is the New Year. I always celebrate it with my family. Before the holiday we often visit our friends and relatives and give them presents. We often go to the city centre to see the beautiful New Year tree on the main square.
We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands.
We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.
On the 31st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.
At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne.
We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.
When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.

Dear Jackie,
Thanks for your letter. I’m awfully sorry for not replying sooner.
Frankly speaking, Christmas which is celebrated on the 7 of January in our country, isn’t so popular as New Year’s Day. At Christmas night lots of people go to church to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. Children enjoy singing carols. As my father is a priest in the local church, I always help him in the altar during the mass. I like Christmas best of all because the solemn moments of the holiday make me feel happy.
We also celebrate Women’s Day, Easter, Victory Day, Day of People’s Unity and Independence Day.
By the way, how do you celebrate Easter in Britain? Are there any Halloween traditions you don’t like? When do you mark Mothers’ Day?

Dear Paul,
Thank you for your letter. I hope all’s going well.
You know, we don’t actually celebrate April Fools’ Day but sometimes we play pranks on our classmates and friends.
As for Russian holidays, the most popular among them are New Year’s Day and Christmas. We usually decorate a New Year tree, send colourful e-cards and give presents to our friends and relatives. New Year’s Day is considered to be a family holiday that’s why most people stay at home to see the New Year in.
Also we celebrate Women’s Day, Victory Day and Independence Day. You may attend concerts and fireworks that take place in many cities throughout the country.
It’s great you’ve got a new phone! Is it a touch screen smartphone? Can you email from it? What options does your new phone have?

Children go from door to door singing Christmas carols and people give them sweets, fruit and some money. Kutya is a traditional Christmas dish in Russia.
