Normal People is an Irish romantic psychological drama limited series produced by Element Pictures for BBC Three and Hulu in association with Screen Ireland.[1][2][3] It is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Sally Rooney. The series follows the relationship between Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal), as they navigate adulthood from their final days in secondary school to their undergraduate years in Trinity College. The series was primarily written by Rooney and Alice Birch and directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald.

The series was released on BBC Three in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2020, followed by weekly airings on BBC One. It premiered on RTÉ One in Ireland on 28 April 2020. In the United States, the series was released in its entirety on Hulu on 29 April 2020. The series has received critical acclaim, with praise for the performances, directing, writing, aesthetics, and its portrayal of mature content. At the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, the series was nominated for four awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor for Mescal and Outstanding Directing for Abrahamson.[4]

Premise[edit]

The series follows Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron through their time at secondary school in County Sligo on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, and later as undergraduate students at Trinity College Dublin.

The focus is mainly Connell’s and Marianne’s complex relationship. Among her peers at secondary school, Marianne is regarded as an oddball, but she denies caring about her social standing.

Despite her academic achievements, her home life is complicated by her dismissive mother, Denise, and her resentful brother, Alan. Her father is deceased and is later revealed to have been domestically abusive, though her family avoids mentioning him.

Connell is an athletic, high-achieving student living with his single mother Lorraine, who is employed by Denise as a house cleaner. He is popular in school, though he remains silent while Marianne is constantly bullied. This creates complexity and point of contention as their relationship develops.

  • Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne Sheridan, a student from an affluent family who is studious, outspoken, and therefore disliked. She begins a relationship with Connell which he suggests they keep secret. She later attends Trinity College Dublin and studies history and politics. Marianne struggles with validation from her family and romantic relationships which have an impact on the way she views herself.
  • Paul Mescal as Connell Waldron, a well-liked, academically gifted student and athlete. His mother works as a cleaner for Marianne’s family. He struggles with what he wants out of life and decides to follow Marianne’s suggestion and apply to be an undergraduate at Trinity College to study English.

  • Sarah Greene as Lorraine Waldron, Connell’s single mother who is employed by the Sheridan family as their cleaner. She and Connell share a close relationship and she expresses disappointment when Connell chooses his public image over treating Marianne well when they are in school. Prior to Marianne and Connell’s secret relationship, she is very close with Marianne.
  • Aislín McGuckin as Denise Sheridan, Marianne’s single, wealthy mother who is a solicitor. Marianne’s father is described as being abusive towards her. She doesn’t have a close relationship with Marianne and often fails to control Alan’s abuse towards Marianne throughout the series.
  • Éanna Hardwicke as Rob Hegarty, a close friend of Connell’s who attends the same school.
  • Frank Blake as Alan Sheridan, Marianne’s brother with whom she’s not close. He does not treat Marianne well, frequently makes derisive comments about her, and is sometimes physically abusive.
  • Eliot Salt as Joanna, a close friend Marianne meets at Trinity College.
  • India Mullen as Peggy, a friend Marianne makes at Trinity College who also comes from a wealthy background.
  • Desmond Eastwood as Niall, Connell’s flatmate during his time at Trinity College. He and Marianne become friends and he often encourages Connell and Marianne’s relationship.
  • Sebastian de Souza as Gareth, the classmate of Connell’s at Trinity College who is an advocate of free speech and Marianne’s early collegiate love interest.
  • Fionn O’Shea as Jamie, part of Marianne’s social circle at Trinity College who is very competitive. He has a crush on Marianne throughout their university days.
  • Leah McNamara as Rachel Moran, a fellow schoolmate of Marianne and Connell’s and part of Connell’s social circle. She and Connell once had a casual fling, making her occasionally jealous of Marianne. Connell asks her to the Debs formal instead of Marianne, resulting in them becoming estranged for the first time.
  • Seán Doyle as Eric, one of Connell’s school friends.
  • Niamh Lynch as Karen, one of the nicer girls to Marianne at school in Sligo.

Development and casting[edit]

In May 2019, it was announced that BBC Three and Hulu ordered 12 episodes based on the novel that would premiere 2020 starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal as Marianne and Connell, respectively.[6] Sarah Greene and Aislín McGuckin were also announced as part of the cast.[7] Sally Rooney herself would help with the adaptation alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe. Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald would direct and the Irish company Element Pictures would produce the series.[8][9]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began on location in County Sligo and Dublin in May 2019.[10]

Tubbercurry primarily made up the fictional town of Carricklea, with Streedagh Point along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way used for beach scenes, Knockmore House in Enniskerry, County Wicklow for the Sheridans’ residence, a terraced home in Shankill, Dublin for the Waldrons’ residence, and Hartstown Community School in Clonsilla, Fingal, County Dublin for the secondary school scenes featuring real-life students in the background.[11] Students from Trinity College Dublin were also featured in the series while filming at the university.[12][13] Scenes at Marianne’s Dublin flat were shot on Wellington Road in the affluent area of Ballsbridge.

Although set in Trieste in the novel, filming took place in Central Italy, primarily in and around Sant’Oreste, Stimigliano, and the villa Il Casale on Tenuta di Verzano, in Lazio. They waited until February 2020 to film the Sweden scenes in Luleå so snow would be on the ground and the Baltic Sea frozen over for Marianne to walk on.[9]

Release[edit]

The first look pictures came out on 1 November 2019. BBC Three and Hulu released their own teasers on 17 January 2020, followed by trailers on 31 March 2020.[15]

The 12 episodes became available as a BBC Three box set on BBC iPlayer on 26 April, followed by a BBC One airing on 27 April. The series became available on Stan in Australia on 27 April and began airing on RTÉ One in Ireland on 28 April.[16][17] The series premiered in the US on Hulu on 29 April.[18] The series has been sold to over 20 broadcasters worldwide.[19]

In June 2020, Abrahamson directed Edgar-Jones and Mescal in a one-off spoof short episode as part of RTÉ Does Comic Relief, in which Marianne and Connell give confessions to a priest played by Andrew Scott.[20][21]

Critical response[edit]

The series has received critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 91% «Certified Fresh» rating, with an average score of 8.15/10 based on 85 reviews. The site’s critic consensus states, «Anchored by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal’s vulnerable performances, Normal People is at once intimate and illuminating, beautifully translating the nuances of its source material.»[22] On Metacritic the series has a score of 82 out of 100 based on reviews from 25 critics, indicating «universal acclaim».[23]

Caroline Framke of Variety magazine wrote: «With its trifecta of elegant writing, directing, and acting, Hulu’s Normal People is just as bleak and uncompromising as Rooney’s novel—a feat, and one that takes several episodes to fully absorb. In fact, it took me until about halfway through to understand just how much it was affecting me. … As Marianne and Connell’s relationship grows deeper, Normal People becomes as immersive as the book that inspired it, making you both crave and dread knowing—or perhaps more accurately, experiencing—what happens next.»[24]

The production has received particular praise for its realistic portrayal of intimate content[25] and the work of Ita O’Brien as the show’s intimacy coordinator.[26] The nudity sparked debate on Irish radio, with callers to Joe Duffy’s Liveline saying it was inappropriate.[27]

The series has been widely praised by major critics and publications. Linda Holmes of NPR described Normal People as «a lovely series, not just to binge, but perhaps to dole out to yourself a couple of episodes at a time»[28] while CNN described it as «perfectly [understanding of] the desires we place on communication technologies and the ways they nearly always come up short» and «irresistible in abnormal times».[29]

Prathyush Parasuraman of Film Companion, wrote, «Rarely have I seen the sort of cultural dialogue that I saw post the release of Normal People in April 2020, when it was released in the UK. Based on Sally Rooney’s namesake book, the story follows Marianne and Connell through the later years of their high-school, their years at college, and the post-collegiate restlessness, failing to be what one wished for oneself only years ago. It’s set in and around Ireland, with brief detours to sunny Italy and snowy Sweden.»[30]

The Irish Independent noted that the series glosses over references to The Communist Manifesto and Doris Lessing’s feminist novel The Golden Notebook, which Rooney, who has described herself as a Marxist, included in the book.[31]

Viewing figures[edit]

Normal People reportedly gave BBC Three its best ever week on iPlayer (26 April to 3 May), receiving over 16.2 million programme requests across the 12 episodes, about 5 million of which were from 16- to 34-year-olds, and bringing BBC Three requests up to 21.8 million, doubling the previous record of 10.8 million from the release of the first series of Killing Eve. Seventy per cent of BBC Three requests that week were for Normal People and a quarter had finished all 12 episodes.[32][33] It became the most-streamed series of the year on the BBC, with 62.7 million views from April to November 2020.[34]

The first two episodes were reported to have been watched on RTÉ One by an average of 371,000 viewers with an additional 19,000 on RTÉ One +1 and 301,000 streams on RTÉ Player, becoming the most watched opening of a drama series on RTÉ Player. Thirty per cent of 15- to 34-year-olds watching TV were watching Normal People.[35] The finale had over 319,000 viewers, 33% of the total RTÉ audience and 20% increase over the previous week.

In June 2020, it was reported that Normal People had garnered over 3 million views on RTÉ Player, breaking the previous record for the streaming service of 1.2 million, which was held by the fourth series of Love/Hate.[36]

Normal People is an Irish romantic psychological drama limited series produced by Element Pictures for BBC Three and Hulu in association with Screen Ireland.[1][2][3] It is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Sally Rooney. The series follows the relationship between Marianne Sheridan (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Paul Mescal), as they navigate adulthood from their final days in secondary school to their undergraduate years in Trinity College. The series was primarily written by Rooney and Alice Birch and directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald.

The series was released on BBC Three in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2020, followed by weekly airings on BBC One. It premiered on RTÉ One in Ireland on 28 April 2020. In the United States, the series was released in its entirety on Hulu on 29 April 2020. The series has received critical acclaim, with praise for the performances, directing, writing, aesthetics, and its portrayal of mature content. At the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, the series was nominated for four awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor for Mescal and Outstanding Directing for Abrahamson.[4]

Premise[edit]

The series follows Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron through their time at secondary school in County Sligo on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, and later as undergraduate students at Trinity College Dublin.

The focus is mainly Connell’s and Marianne’s complex relationship. Among her peers at secondary school, Marianne is regarded as an oddball, but she denies caring about her social standing.

Despite her academic achievements, her home life is complicated by her dismissive mother, Denise, and her resentful brother, Alan. Her father is deceased and is later revealed to have been domestically abusive, though her family avoids mentioning him.

Connell is an athletic, high-achieving student living with his single mother Lorraine, who is employed by Denise as a house cleaner. He is popular in school, though he remains silent while Marianne is constantly bullied. This creates complexity and point of contention as their relationship develops.

  • Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne Sheridan, a student from an affluent family who is studious, outspoken, and therefore disliked. She begins a relationship with Connell which he suggests they keep secret. She later attends Trinity College Dublin and studies history and politics. Marianne struggles with validation from her family and romantic relationships which have an impact on the way she views herself.
  • Paul Mescal as Connell Waldron, a well-liked, academically gifted student and athlete. His mother works as a cleaner for Marianne’s family. He struggles with what he wants out of life and decides to follow Marianne’s suggestion and apply to be an undergraduate at Trinity College to study English.

  • Sarah Greene as Lorraine Waldron, Connell’s single mother who is employed by the Sheridan family as their cleaner. She and Connell share a close relationship and she expresses disappointment when Connell chooses his public image over treating Marianne well when they are in school. Prior to Marianne and Connell’s secret relationship, she is very close with Marianne.
  • Aislín McGuckin as Denise Sheridan, Marianne’s single, wealthy mother who is a solicitor. Marianne’s father is described as being abusive towards her. She doesn’t have a close relationship with Marianne and often fails to control Alan’s abuse towards Marianne throughout the series.
  • Éanna Hardwicke as Rob Hegarty, a close friend of Connell’s who attends the same school.
  • Frank Blake as Alan Sheridan, Marianne’s brother with whom she’s not close. He does not treat Marianne well, frequently makes derisive comments about her, and is sometimes physically abusive.
  • Eliot Salt as Joanna, a close friend Marianne meets at Trinity College.
  • India Mullen as Peggy, a friend Marianne makes at Trinity College who also comes from a wealthy background.
  • Desmond Eastwood as Niall, Connell’s flatmate during his time at Trinity College. He and Marianne become friends and he often encourages Connell and Marianne’s relationship.
  • Sebastian de Souza as Gareth, the classmate of Connell’s at Trinity College who is an advocate of free speech and Marianne’s early collegiate love interest.
  • Fionn O’Shea as Jamie, part of Marianne’s social circle at Trinity College who is very competitive. He has a crush on Marianne throughout their university days.
  • Leah McNamara as Rachel Moran, a fellow schoolmate of Marianne and Connell’s and part of Connell’s social circle. She and Connell once had a casual fling, making her occasionally jealous of Marianne. Connell asks her to the Debs formal instead of Marianne, resulting in them becoming estranged for the first time.

Development and casting[edit]

In May 2019, it was announced that BBC Three and Hulu ordered 12 episodes based on the novel that would premiere 2020 starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal as Marianne and Connell, respectively.[6] Sarah Greene and Aislín McGuckin were also announced as part of the cast.[7] Sally Rooney herself would help with the adaptation alongside writers Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe. Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald would direct and the Irish company Element Pictures would produce the series.[8][9]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography began on location in County Sligo and Dublin in May 2019.[10]

Tubbercurry primarily made up the fictional town of Carricklea, with Streedagh Point along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way used for beach scenes, Knockmore House in Enniskerry, County Wicklow for the Sheridans’ residence, a terraced home in Shankill, Dublin for the Waldrons’ residence, and Hartstown Community School in Clonsilla, Fingal, County Dublin for the secondary school scenes featuring real-life students in the background.[11] Students from Trinity College Dublin were also featured in the series while filming at the university.[12][13] Scenes at Marianne’s Dublin flat were shot on Wellington Road in the affluent area of Ballsbridge.

Although set in Trieste in the novel, filming took place in Central Italy, primarily in and around Sant’Oreste, Stimigliano, and the villa Il Casale on Tenuta di Verzano, in Lazio. They waited until February 2020 to film the Sweden scenes in Luleå so snow would be on the ground and the Baltic Sea frozen over for Marianne to walk on.[9]

Release[edit]

The first look pictures came out on 1 November 2019. BBC Three and Hulu released their own teasers on 17 January 2020, followed by trailers on 31 March 2020.[15]

The 12 episodes became available as a BBC Three box set on BBC iPlayer on 26 April, followed by a BBC One airing on 27 April. The series became available on Stan in Australia on 27 April and began airing on RTÉ One in Ireland on 28 April.[16][17] The series premiered in the US on Hulu on 29 April.[18] The series has been sold to over 20 broadcasters worldwide.[19]

In June 2020, Abrahamson directed Edgar-Jones and Mescal in a one-off spoof short episode as part of RTÉ Does Comic Relief, in which Marianne and Connell give confessions to a priest played by Andrew Scott.[20][21]

Critical response[edit]

The series has received critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 91% «Certified Fresh» rating, with an average score of 8.15/10 based on 85 reviews. The site’s critic consensus states, «Anchored by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal’s vulnerable performances, Normal People is at once intimate and illuminating, beautifully translating the nuances of its source material.»[22] On Metacritic the series has a score of 82 out of 100 based on reviews from 25 critics, indicating «universal acclaim».[23]

Caroline Framke of Variety magazine wrote: «With its trifecta of elegant writing, directing, and acting, Hulu’s Normal People is just as bleak and uncompromising as Rooney’s novel—a feat, and one that takes several episodes to fully absorb. In fact, it took me until about halfway through to understand just how much it was affecting me. … As Marianne and Connell’s relationship grows deeper, Normal People becomes as immersive as the book that inspired it, making you both crave and dread knowing—or perhaps more accurately, experiencing—what happens next.»[24]

The production has received particular praise for its realistic portrayal of intimate content[25] and the work of Ita O’Brien as the show’s intimacy coordinator.[26] The nudity sparked debate on Irish radio, with callers to Joe Duffy’s Liveline saying it was inappropriate.[27]

The series has been widely praised by major critics and publications. Linda Holmes of NPR described Normal People as «a lovely series, not just to binge, but perhaps to dole out to yourself a couple of episodes at a time»[28] while CNN described it as «perfectly [understanding of] the desires we place on communication technologies and the ways they nearly always come up short» and «irresistible in abnormal times».[29]

Prathyush Parasuraman of Film Companion, wrote, «Rarely have I seen the sort of cultural dialogue that I saw post the release of Normal People in April 2020, when it was released in the UK. Based on Sally Rooney’s namesake book, the story follows Marianne and Connell through the later years of their high-school, their years at college, and the post-collegiate restlessness, failing to be what one wished for oneself only years ago. It’s set in and around Ireland, with brief detours to sunny Italy and snowy Sweden.»[30]

The Irish Independent noted that the series glosses over references to The Communist Manifesto and Doris Lessing’s feminist novel The Golden Notebook, which Rooney, who has described herself as a Marxist, included in the book.[31]

Viewing figures[edit]

Normal People reportedly gave BBC Three its best ever week on iPlayer (26 April to 3 May), receiving over 16.2 million programme requests across the 12 episodes, about 5 million of which were from 16- to 34-year-olds, and bringing BBC Three requests up to 21.8 million, doubling the previous record of 10.8 million from the release of the first series of Killing Eve. Seventy per cent of BBC Three requests that week were for Normal People and a quarter had finished all 12 episodes.[32][33] It became the most-streamed series of the year on the BBC, with 62.7 million views from April to November 2020.[34]

The first two episodes were reported to have been watched on RTÉ One by an average of 371,000 viewers with an additional 19,000 on RTÉ One +1 and 301,000 streams on RTÉ Player, becoming the most watched opening of a drama series on RTÉ Player. Thirty per cent of 15- to 34-year-olds watching TV were watching Normal People.[35] The finale had over 319,000 viewers, 33% of the total RTÉ audience and 20% increase over the previous week.

In June 2020, it was reported that Normal People had garnered over 3 million views on RTÉ Player, breaking the previous record for the streaming service of 1.2 million, which was held by the fourth series of Love/Hate.[36]

Коннелл и Марианна — старшеклассники из провинциального Слайго. Когда они смотрят в окно на уроке, то видят тоску зеленую — знаменитые холмы, умытые дождем, припудренные туманом, двухэтажную Ирландию на грани классовой войны, ибо экономический пузырь лопнул, а к 2011 году затрещала по швам и Единая Европа. Марианна предсказуемо ненавидит окружающих — и сокашников и учителей, но и себя ненавидит тоже, все обидное на свой счет подумала и прошептала сама. Коннелл — напротив, «популярный» парень, хотя награда нашла героя без спроса. Он — краеугольный квотербэк, крепкий, ладный, потный, такой he’s a man, и лишь Марианне очевидно, что колосс — на глиняных ногах. Короче, чучело и лидер забега. Принцесса и нищий. Красавец и чудовище. Они такие разные, но все же попробуют быть вместе. В постели, не на виду. Ведь Коннелл пуще чумы боится общественного мнения, дислайков в соцсетях и вопросительных взглядов. Он убедил себя, что вне стаи жизни нет. И его отношениям с Марианной в особенности. 

Их сблизит Лоррейн, мать Коннелла, работающая уборщицей в поместье Марианны. А еще коммунистический манифест, в сериале, впрочем, его заменили на книжку по фемоптике. Чтобы привнести современность, в 2020-м гендерный конфликт острее социального. Фемповесткой пропитан в «Нормальных людях» каждый кадр, каждый вздох. А дышат все тяжело, как будто торопятся вкусить жизни неспелые плоды, наесться досыта настоящим моментом, пока прошлое не распахнет свои совиные крыла и не утащит снова в пубертатную яму, полную травм.

Главное отличие экранизации от оригинала, конечно, не в книжках, не в подмене измов, у Руни тело — лишь оболочка души, у авторов сериала, по крайней мере у Ленни Абрахамсона, ответственного за первые шесть эпизодов, форма и содержание, этика и эстетика идут рука об руку — на равных, паритетных условиях. И секс здесь в объективе женщины, причем буквально, оба оператора — «второго пола» и действуют ровно по методичке Симоны де Бовуар. Конкретно это проявляется в визуальном удовольствии, о котором 40 лет назад так пеклась Лаура Малви. Годами альковные утехи предполагали, что дамам достаточно поцелуя для оргазма, в «Нормальных людях» нормально показано, что достигается оргазм продолжительными ласками и каждая деталь при восхождении на пик страшно важна. От мужской задницы, которая возбуждает не меньше женской, до ритма телодвижений. Говорят, на площадке находились приглашенные специалисты — по борьбе за новую этику — так вот позвали их не зря. Здоровый секс в «Нормальных людях» удался на славу, смешно только, что таковым он не задумывался по сценарию.

Монотонные совокупления Марианны с Коннеллом, все эти жадные объятья через будничную паузу, они не про ложбины эротики в эмоциональном пейзаже, а про канавы психосоматики, про раны, нанесенные другими «нормальными людьми» — умышленно или нет, неважно, ободранные сердца кровят, не хотят рубцеваться.

Салли Руни с первых же страниц делает ставку на недостаток кислорода, сухая, безэмоциональная проза, что копит силы от главы к главе, — никаких тебе сиреневых теней под пушистыми ресницами, покачивающихся жемчужно-серых занавесок, дымчатых бокалов, ворсинок на одежде, герои не разглядывают друг друга, одержимые желанием упомнить все черточки — где-то после летнего вояжа в Венето, ядовитые испарения духа времени заполняют пространство, культура травмы накрывает с головой. Вот что бывает с теми, кого не любили в детстве или кто не сумел полюбить в ответ. Вот, получите, распишитесь. Панические атаки, суицидальные мотивы, слезы на кушетке психотерапевта, self harm и БДСМ-практики, шумящее в ушах одиночество, яростная печаль в глазах. Любое междометие, шмыгание носом или пожимание плечами — портал в бесконечность, в бездну лиминальных проблем. 

В сериале оба режиссера увлечены фактурой, да и грех с таким кастингом ее игнорировать. Пол Мескаль — явно открытие года — сумел привнести в образ Коннелла не только психическое расстройство, но и физическое превосходство — над вообще всем вокруг, включая интерьерные и ландшафтные изыски. Дэйзи Эдгар–Джонс гораздо красивее, чем ее романный прототип, но баланс между буржуазными капризами и маргинальными репризами выдерживает идеально, кружевное белье и грубые ботинки ей в помощь. Однако утомительное пришепетывание режиссеров, которых мелодрама сингулярных характеров, их кошки-мышки привлекают явно больше поколенческой хвори — виктимности в школе и дома, в постели и на кухне, за рулем и на пассажирском сиденье — выливается в предельно раздражающий диссонанс обстоятельств и намерений. Постоянно хочется схватить протагонистов за грудки, встряхнуть хорошенько и крикнуть им в зареванные лица: да в чем ваша проблема, нецензурное, нецензурное, хватить гонять. О каких травмах вы тут льете слезы, если даже брат-абьюзер толком проявил себя лишь в предпоследней серии, невзначай расквасив Марианне нос? Может вы просто станете так же поэтично и реалистично трахаться и дальше, как делают все нормальные люди, которым страшно жить, а еще заглядывать в себя, в будущее и в платяной шкаф — там не столько скелеты, сколько неоплаченные счета, ч/б фотографии и дневник, полный несбывшихся надежд.

С Руни можно было не соглашаться, с Абрахамсоном и Макдональд хочется именно протестовать. Зачем вы так долго играли на наших возбужденных карантином чувствах, скользили по позабытым эрогенным зонам, намекали каждым планом на Хаммерсхоя и Уайета, на тактильность пустоты? Чтобы под конец развести тут какую-то Ханью Янагихару, только с привкусом «Гиннесса», а не «Будвайзера»? Джойс с Диланом Томасом, наверное, перевернулись в могиле от подобного миндальничания. Только смерть — непреодолима, поэтому секс по умолчанию связан со страхом, все остальное можно победить, особенно в 20 с чем-то, когда эрекцию не берут антидепрессанты, а жажду жизни — рутина, когда в жару по-прежнему хочется мороженого, а в стужу — шоколадный фондан и закутаться в дубленку Chloe. Цвет депрессии, легкой формы безумия, безусловно лиловый, как бюстгальтер Марианны, который она так невзначай надела в разгар истерики, который Коннелл так картинно снял с нее на грани нервного срыва.

Добрачная история: почему все обсуждают сериал «Нормальные люди»

Одна из главных премьер весны — сериал «Нормальные люди», экранизация бестселлера 29-летней ирландки Салли Руни. Историю любви молодых людей Коннелла и Марианны обсуждает весь мир, шоу стало рекордным для «Би-би-си» по просмотрам в сети. Кинокритик «Газеты.Ru» Павел Воронков объясняет феномен «Нормальных людей».

«Нормальные люди»? Впервые слышу…

Это экранизация одноименного романа ирландки Салли Руни — новой суперзвезды англоязычной литературы. «Нормальные люди» вышли в 2018 году и стали огромным хитом: оказались в лонг-листе «Букера», взяли престижную премию Коста (более «народную», чем Букеровская), а также попали в список 100 лучших книг XXI века по версии газеты The Guardian. Для Руни, которой еще нет и 30-ти, это всего лишь вторая работа. В 2017-м она дебютировала с романом «Разговоры с друзьями», также ставшим бестселлером. За обе книги между издательствами шла аукционная война — и обе в итоге вышли под лейблом Faber & Faber. Именно редакторша Faber Митци Энджел назвала писательницу «Сэлинджером для поколения Snapchat». Эта звучная характеристика быстро прилипла к Руни (писательница сама отмечала, что вдохновлялась автором «Над пропастью во ржи»). «Нормальные люди» — история отношений двух молодых людей: Коннелла и Марианны. В определенной степени они — Леди (богатая, но нелюдимая) и Бродяга (бедный и популярный), только все намного сложнее. Мы встречаем их в выпускном классе школы и провожаем через все университетские годы. Это не типичная романтическая сказка с обязательным хэппи-эндом, но и не трагедия с заламыванием рук. Руни с некоторой дежурностью ведет хронику их любви, не опуская неприятные детали: созависимость, психологический абьюз, извечная тревожность и неуверенность. Неявный финал развивающейся по спирали истории сложно назвать счастливым. Но многим он покажется до ужаса знакомым. К слову, «Нормальных людей» издали на русском языке в этом апреле, — как раз одновременно со стартом экранизации. Споров книга вызвала не меньше сериала.

Окей, а из-за чего вдруг такой шум?

«Нормальные люди» — это «Чернобыль» 2020 года. Вряд ли кто-то рассчитывал, что сериал HBO станет ярчайшим культурным феноменом. Однако — стал. Такое иногда случается. В отношении «Нормальных людей» — тоже совершенно заслуженно. Шоу оказалось настоящим подарком для «Би-би-си». За неделю после премьеры в сети «Нормальных людей» посмотрели более 16 млн зрителей (на стрим-площадке канала iPlayer), сейчас цифры близки к 30 млн. Отчасти такое повышенное внимание к проекту связано с успехом оригинала. Процесс экранизации занял очень мало времени: с публикации книги не прошло и двух лет, о ней по-прежнему активно говорят.

Вероятно, на руку сыграла и ситуация в мире: у людей попросту появилось гораздо больше часов досуга, которые можно потратить на сериалы. Еще шоу прославилось ассортиментом откровенных постельных сцен: в общей сложности они длятся около 41 минуты (всего в «Нормальных людях» 12 получасовых эпизодов). Нарезку с особенно будоражащими моментами даже залили на PornHub. Ролик быстро удалили после вмешательства продюсеров, однако он стремительно разошелся по другим порносайтам. История только разожгла всеобщее любопытство.

Сейчас «Би-би-си», как пишет таблоид Daily Mirror, страшно хочет добиться продолжения сериала (экранизировать уже нечего, придется сочинять своими силами). Режиссер Ленни Абрахамсон («Фрэнк», «Комната») говорит, что ему было бы интересно увидеть продолжение истории Коннелла и Марианны, повзрослевших лет на десять, — на манер известной трилогии Ричарда Линклейтера «Перед…». Также канал теперь делает большую ставку на грядущую адаптацию дебютного романа Руни «Разговоры с друзьями», которой занимается примерно та же команда: в режиссерском кресле — снова Абрахамсон, за сценарий опять отвечает Элис Берч.

И что? Правда стоит смотреть?

Да, если вы любите честные и откровенные истории о человеческих отношениях. Пожалуй, ближайшим аналогом можно считать «Брачную историю» Ноа Баумбаха, где Адам Драйвер и Скарлетт Йоханссон филигранно разыгрывали изнурительный процесс развода. Стоит, правда, учитывать, что эти честность и откровенность могут прийтись вам не по вкусу. Некоторые говорят, что не видели ничего более жизненного и называют сериал самым тонким телепроектом года. Некоторые обвиняют шоу в запредельной концентрации сахара и сетуют на непроходящее желание взять героев за грудки. Правда где-то посередине: «Нормальные люди» изящно балансируют между придыхательным романтизмом и холодным реализмом. Те или иные сильные эмоции сериал вызовет точно — равнодушным пока никто не остался.

Берч и Абрахамсону удалось сохранить трепетность оригинального текста (вероятно, из-за участия самой писательницы). А в чем-то даже его превзойти. Руни пишет аскетично и емко, в книжке всего 280 страниц. Многое из того, что на бумаге занимало пару предложений или абзацев, на экране задышало и разрослось до полноценных сцен. Редкий случай: на то, что в книге «все было не так», жаловаться почти нет причин. Разумеется, какие-то изменения все же закрались. В романе присутствовала тонкая, но все же явная социально-политическая линия, место и время действия были вполне конкретными и не случайными: Ирландия эпохи кризиса 2008 — 2013 годов. В адаптации «Би-би-си» эти острые углы сглажены в угоду большей универсальности, поэтому, например, Марианна обсуждает с Коннелом не коммунистический манифест, а феминистский трактат.

Еще одна безусловная заслуга сериала — великолепный кастинг. Главных героев сыграли малоизвестные артисты Дэйзи Эдгар-Джонс и Пол Мескал. Теперь они, понятно, звезды. Вскипающая между ними химия — то, что не позволяет отлипнуть от экрана. Постельные сцены — отдельный разговор (на съемках, кстати, работала представительница сравнительно новой профессии — координатор интимных сцен). Секс в «Нормальных людях» показан предельно натуралистично, но вместе с тем — красиво и чувственно. Под конец, правда, это поражает уже не так сильно, однако шоу все равно задает новые стандарты. В конце концов, со времен «Игры престолов» прошло уже достаточно времени — давно пора. Недавно мы писали, что Мерритт Уивер и Донал Глисон из «Беги» составили лучшую пару сезона. Что ж, этот титул следует незамедлительно передать Эдгар-Джонс и Мескалу. Связаться с ними, впрочем, сейчас будет непросто.

В этой истории про молодую ирландскую пару много тонко снятых постельных сцен, но это еще не все ее достоинства.

Роман ирландской писательницы Салли Руни «Нормальные люди» (Normal People) вышел в оригинале в конце 2018 года и в два счета стал мировым бестселлером. Но споткнулся о Россию — в бумажном виде книгу на русском языке выпустили только в середине мая, в то время как экранизация в виде одноименного британского сериала подоспела уже в конце апреля. Сейчас сериал доступен в онлайн-кинотеатре «КиноПоиск HD» — при желании его можно смотреть с только что вышедшей книжкой в руках.

Издатель Руни поспешил назвать ее «Сэлинджером для миллениалов», имея в виду сходство «Нормальных людей» с романом «Над пропастью во ржи». На самом деле ничего подобного, хотя две книги сближает концентрированная рефлексия и отсутствие активного действия. Но у Сэлинджера — один главный герой, а у Руни их двое, и в данном случае это очень важно.

В книге речь идет о старшеклассниках — подростках из микроскопического ирландского городка Слайго. Коннелл Уолдрон — красавец-скромняга, звезда школы, на которого западают девочки, но из бедной семьи — его мама работает уборщицей в богатом доме адвокатессы. Мэриэн Шеридан, напротив, богата, ее мать — та самая адвокатесса; девушка умна, но себе на уме, в школе ее считают странной, с придурью. Две параллельные прямые случайно сталкиваются, Коннелла и Мэриэн тянет друг к другу, вскоре они оказываются в одной постели, обоим кажется, что это любовь, но из этого ничего не выходит: на выпускной Коннелл приглашает другую — не подозревая, что совершает первое в жизни предательство.

Зная по книге, что речь идет о старшеклассниках, представляешь себе щуплых подростков. Но режиссеры (их тут двое — Ленни Абрахамсон и Хетти МакДональд) разрушили стереотипы и позвали на эти роли очень взросло выглядящих актеров-дебютантов. В статике Пол Мескал (Коннел) — взрослый дядька, а не школьник, да и Дейзи Эдгар-Джонс (Мэриэн) — не подросток, но вот же сила искусства: об этом забываешь через минуту, с первых кадров поверив в трепет чувств персонажей. В смысле актерской пластичности и тонкости игры несомненно одаренный Мескал парадоксально напоминает Эдди Редмейна — только если бы Редмейн утратил свою хрупкость и несколько огрубел. И Мескала, и Дейзи Эдгар-Джонс наверняка ждет большое будущее. Во всяком случае, они его заслуживают.

По картинке «Нормальные люди» сняты нарочито документально — трудно отделаться от ощущения, что в кадре настоящая, не постановочная Ирландия. За этим кадром звучит много меланхоличного фортепиано. Даже на дискотеке в клубе, где резвится молодежь, играет не что-то заводное, а холодная музыка группы London Grammar — чтобы понять, почувствовать и полюбить этот сериал, вы должны любить ковыряться в себе и понимать, что стылые темные ноябри очень часто лучше развеселых жарких июлей.

Ничего не происходит, просто Коннел не позвал Мэриэн на выпускной, искренне полагая, что это не помешает их отношениям. Конечно, это помешало, он горько плачет, но что теперь делать. Оба поступают в колледж и долгое время не видятся, но вдруг выясняется, что они оба в Дублине, и все былое в холодном сердце вдруг ожило. Но теперь она — звезда компании, аленький цветочек наконец раскрылся, а он — невнятный нищеброд, подрабатывающий официантом. Они опять сближаются и до конца 12-й серии, конечно, расстанутся и сойдутся еще много раз без видимых на то причин.

Прелесть «Нормальных людей» в том, что там не происходит ничего. Ничего, кроме обычной жизни с кучей мелочей вроде долбанутого брата героини и сложной матери у нее же. Как работает опытный сценарист, крепкий профессионал? Расставляет на шахматной доске антагониста и протагониста, цепляет побочные линии к сквозной фабуле, изобретает захватывающие сюжетные повороты. Ничего подобного тут нет и в помине. Герои просто исследуют себя и партнера, мучительно взрослеют, ищут — живут, и самое худшее, что могло бы случиться в конце этой истории, — свадьба и чтобы все стали счастливы. Разве понимает Коннелл, почему он не позвал Мэриэн на выпускной? Разве понимает она, почему не разрешила ему пожить у нее, когда он потерял комнату? Если любишь, то что? А как понять, что любишь? А вдруг любишь, но не по-настоящему?

Ему не хватает уверенности в себе, у нее не получается избавиться от застарелых и все время усугубляемых тиранической семьей травм, мир обоих готов в любую минуту обрушиться. В какой-то момент у Коннела случается нервный срыв, Мэриэн на пороге его же. Сила любви способна справиться и с тем, и с другим, спустя годы очевидно — во всем мире нет для Коннела человека ближе, чем Мэриэн, а для Мэриэн — ближе, чем Коннел, но нет, тут явно обойдется без марша Мендельсона. И это, поверьте, вовсе не трагедия.

Салли Руни и сейчас 29, выходит, «Настоящих людей» она дописывала в 27. В юные, в общем-то, годы ей удалось затащить себе в свою нетолстую книжку саму жизнь, а авторам сериала — бережно визуализировать ее замысел.

Под меланхоличное фортепиано вы увидите много, очень много постельных сцен, снятых виртуозно и натуралистично одновременно. Операторы (тут и их двое, да что ж такое!) Сьюзи Лэвэлл и Кэйт МакКаллоу показывают высший пилотаж, пройдя по краю с целомудренным бесстыдством. Секс тут начисто лишен киношности и иногда это заставляет испытывать неловкость: ох, как неудобно-то вышло, я случайно у экрана оказался, извините.

Несомненно, это книга и роман нынешнего молодого поколения. Но фоновая реальность в «Нормальных людях» условна — герои иногда упоминают фейсбук и на этом все. Normal — прежде всего значит «обычный», а обычные люди бывают всегда и везде. Герои могли жить не в Слайго и Дублине, а в Ярославле и Москве, например.

Книги Салли Руни сравнивают еще и с романами Джейн Остин — там вообще XVIII век, а я бы еще вспомнил Франсуазу Саган. Любовь и неизбывная нежность к каждому пупырышку на коже того, кто лежит рядом, часто бывает сопряжена с горечью и болью. Плохо ли это? Не факт.
