Holidays of Russia in English

Holidays in Russia are numerous. People love them, it’s time to spend with family and friends, to pay tribute to the traditions or to glorify the Fatherland. Some are celebrated by the whole world, others only in this country, others – exclusively for a group or family.

Holidays are divided into categories:

• Religious – such as Easter, Christmas, etc.

Один из наиболее ярких политических событий последних десятилетий. И сколько бы времени ни прошло, пока Россия есть – двенадцатое июня для нее день рождения. Именно тогда в 1990 году она стала независимой. И миллионы людей, живших при СССР с трепетом, вспоминают этот день.

Единство народа

Его отмечали с 1649 года вплоть до начала революции 17го. В 2005 году он вновь вернулся в ряды важных праздников.

Мужской день

Когда каждого мужчину можно с полным правом поздравить – 23 февраля. Всех взрослых мужчин, отслуживших в армии или бывавших в силовых структурах (или работающих там). Это день защитников Родины, готовых стоять до конца за мир и единство в своей стране, за ее независимость, ведь 23 февраля в далеком 1918 году первая Красная армия, в состав которой входили обычные рабочие парни, выступила против захватчиков.

Женский день

Его отмечают во всем мире, 8 марта. Самый любимый праздник для всех женщин, от мала до велика. Всех матерей, бабушек, жен, сестер, дочерей, внучек, любимых и ценимых прекрасных женщин! Сильная половина дарит подарки, поздравляет.

Первое мая

В СССР этот день был посвящен миллионам трудящимся. Празднику положили начало рабочие в Чикаго, устроившие пикеты и забастовку. Они требовали человеческих условий – 8ми часовой день. Тогда забастовку подавили, несколько человек заплатило жизнями. Теперь первое мая – день единый для всех в мире, это день единства всех трудящихся.

День Победы

Великий день для многих стран. Особенно участников войны 40х годов. 1418 дней войны, когда народы огромного СССР вместе стояли до конца, защищая свою страну, они не могли сбежать или отказаться, они понимали, что за спиной – их семьи, близкие. За спиной их Родина. Эта война не была для них борьбой за власть или влияние в мире. Она стала защитой от захватчиков, Отечественной войной. И они, наши деды и прадеды смогли победить. Пусть сегодня СССР распался на десяток стран, но для них всех 9 мая- святой день. То, что нельзя забыть.

Even some Russians do not quite understand the concept of this official ‘day off’, but it’s to commemorate ‘Russia Day’ – modern Russia’s ‘birthday’.

We love holidays in Russia and are proud of that fact. I mean, we celebrate the New Year for a full nine days straight (yes, that’s our favorite holiday!)! Then come the ‘gender’ holidays – February 23 (for men) and March 8 (for women), and then, of course, don’t forget the traditional May vacation: first, it’s three to four days off on May 1st (depending on the how the dates fall on the calendar) and then Victory Day on the 9th, with its parades and historic glory. And then comes summer and guess what? Another holiday, on June 12th!

So, what’s it about?

The official name of the holiday is ‘Russia Day’ (Dien Rossii). It marks the anniversary of the First Congress of People’s Deputies adopting the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) in 1990.

What?!

Putting bureaucratic terms aside, we can reformulate it as follows: on June 12, 1990, when the Soviet Union was on the verge of collapse, the RSFSR (historical Russia, the biggest and the central republic of the USSR) followed other republics by declaring sovereignty and stating that its laws superseded Soviet ones.

De facto, that meant that Boris Yeltsin, leader of the RSFSR, became a direct rival to Mikhail Gorbachev, who remained president of the USSR. That, combined with multiple national conflicts and other republics’ pursuit of independence, ultimately led to the USSR’s dissolution the following year. Thus, the Russian Federation as we know it now was born.

Speaking about the Sovereignty Declaration in 2001, president Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of the document: “It marked the beginning of the new history of our state. The history of a democratic state based on civil freedoms and the rule of law.”

So, June 12 has been Russia Day since 1990?

Well, not exactly! The following year, on June 12, 1991, Russia (still the RSFSR at that time) held its first presidential election, which Boris Yeltsin won. In 1994, he declared June 12 a national holiday – back then it was called ‘Day of adoption of the declaration of state sovereignty of RSFSR’. A bit of a mouthful, wasn’t it? So in 2002, the official title was changed to simply ‘Russia Day’.

Many mistakenly call it ‘Independence Day’, though the holiday never carried such a name, at least officially. In 2018, only 49% of polled by the Levada Center research organization, remembered the name of the holiday correctly. Worryingly, the number is growing: in 2006, only 23% knew what they were celebrating!

What Russians do on Russia Day?

Quoting the NTV channel website, Russia Dayis “a big patriotic holiday, the symbol of national unity and civil peace”. There is an official program: streets and buildings are decorated with the colors of the national flag, concerts and other events are held throughout the day at various locations (including a big show in the Red Square in Moscow), followed by fireworks at the end of the day.

At the same time, Russians seem to spend the day as every other day off work (taking into account that this year the holiday falls on a Wednesday and most have to go to work the next day!): spend time with their families, go for leisurely strolls or simply relax a bit. One thing is certain, though! We are not ready to give up the holiday, even though we are still not 100% sure what it’s all about!

Holidays In Russia

There are many national holidays in Russia, when people all over the country do not work and have special celebrations.

The major holidays are: New Year’s Day, Women’s Day, May Day, Victory Day, and Independence Day.

The first holiday of the year is New Year’s Day. People see the new year in at midnight on the 31st of December. They greet the new year with champagne and listen to the Kremlin chimes beating 12 o’clock.

There are lots of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree glittering with coloured lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people consider New Year’s Day to be a family holiday. But the young prefer to have New Year parties of their own.

A renewed holiday in our country is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 7th of January. It’s a religious holiday and a lot of people go to church services on that day.

On the 8th of March we celebrate Women’s Day when men are supposed to do everything about the house, cook all the meals and give women flowers.

The greatest national holiday in our country is Victory Day. On the 9th of May, 1945, our army completely defeated the German fascists and the Great Patriotic War ended. We’ll never forget our grandfathers and grandmothers who died to defend our Motherland. We honour their memory with a minute of silence and put flowers on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Independence Day is a new holiday in our country. On the 12th of June, 1992, the first President of Russia was elected.

We also celebrate Day of the Defender of Motherland on the 23d of February, Easter, Day of Knowledge and lots of professional holidays which are not public holidays and banks, offices and schools do not close.

В России много праздников, во время которых люди по всей стране не работают и проводят торжественные мероприятия.

Основные праздники: Новый год, Международный Женский День, 1-е мая, День Победы и День независимости.

Первый праздник в году — Новый год. Люди встречают новый год в полночь 31 декабря. Они приветствуют новый год шампанским и слушают Кремлевские куранты в 12 часов.

Есть много новогодних традиций в России. В каждом доме сверкает елка разноцветными огнями и украшениями. Дети всегда ждут Деда Мороза, который приходит и дарит им подарки. Многие люди считают, что Новый год — это семейный праздник. Но молодежь предпочитает проводить новогодние вечеринки.

Возобновленный праздник в нашей стране — Рождество. Оно празднуется 7 января. Это религиозный праздник, и много людей идет на церковные службы в этот день.

8-го марта мы отмечаем Международный женский день, когда мужчины должны делать все по дому, готовить еду, и дарить женщинам цветы.

Самый большой национальный праздник в нашей стране — День Победы. 9 мая 1945 года, наша армия полностью разгромила немецких фашистов и закончилась Великая Отечественная война. Мы никогда не забудем наших дедов и бабушек, которые погибли, защищая нашу Родину. Мы чтим их память минутой молчания и возложением цветов к могиле Неизвестного солдата.

День независимости — новый праздник в нашей стране. 12 июня 1992 года был избран первый президент России.

Мы также отмечаем День защитника отечества 23 февраля, Пасху, День знаний и множество профессиональных праздников, которые не являются государственными праздниками и банки, офисы и школы не закрываются в эти дни.

Almost every country has holidays honouring important events in its history. Some holidays come on the same date, some are movable.

New Year’s Day is very popular all over the world. It is my favourite holiday too.

We celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January. On the 6th of January people cook much food because the day after we must not work. On this day we have a sacred supper. It begins when the first star lights up. As the legend says, this star announced the birth of the God’s Son. We celebrate Christmas for two days. In the evening a group of boys comes. They sing songs. By these songs they congratulate on holiday.

Another religious holiday is Easter. It is movable. In Russia we have special attributes of Easter: Easter eggs, and Easter “paskha”. It is a very nice spring holiday.

Victory Day is on the 9th of May. It is a sacred holiday for every citizen. We are thankful to our grandfathers for the victory in the World War II.

drink champagne.  After the New Year meal people make fireworks, explode
crackers.

People celebrate Women’s
Day on the 8^th of March. Men congratulate girls and women, give
them presents and flowers, do the housework.

People celebrate Defender
of Motherland Day on the 23rd of February. Women prepare gifts for their
loved men.

People celebrate May
Day on the 1^st of May. It is the holiday of spring and labour.
Nobody goes to school or to work.

Victory Day is the day which
commemorates the victory of Russia at the Second World War. The veterans take
part in the military parade. We can see the parades of military machines. There
are patriotic films, songs on TV. People lay wreaths on the Tomb of the Unknown
Soldier.

People celebrate Constitution
Day on the 12^th of December. It is the day when the first
constitution of the RF was adopted in 1993.

Russia  Day is a new holiday
in our country. On the 12^th of June, 1992 the first President was
elected.

National Unity Day  is celebrated on
the 4^th of November.

Religious holidays
include
Christmas, Easter, Shrovetide. People celebrate Christmas on the 7th of
January. The date of Easter changes every year. People exchange colored eggs, go
to church, make cakes called «paska». Shrovetide is the holiday when people see
Winter off and greet Spring. They burn the figure of winter, make pancakes.

Professional 
holidays are the Day of Knowledge, Teacher’s Day 

The 1st of September is
the Day of Knowledge — it’s the beginning of a school year. Children go to
schools with flowers for teachers.

Teacher’s Day
