If you love celebrating Russian festivities, you will have plenty of choices during the summer! August is the most productive month of the year, when Slavic people celebrate three different Saviour (спас) days: the first one is the Savior of the Honey Feast Day, on the 14th of August, then the Savior of the Apple Feast on the 19th of August and, last but not least, the Savior of the Nut Feast Day on the 29th of August. These three feasts have a pre-Christian origin and they are associated with the end of summer and the harvest of ripe fruits. As time passed, they became three important festivities of the Orthodox Church and they’re still celebrated nowadays, especially in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.
As the first Savior Feast Day is approaching, I’m going to tell you something more about this “sweet” (сладкий) holiday. The Savior of the Honey Feast Day is considered the very first autumn’s festivity because by this time the beehives have already been filled with honey, and beekeepers traditionally start reaping the harvest. Since ancient times, on this day there is the special tradition to gather fresh honey and take it to the church to bless it. Only after this ritual you are allowed to eat it. People believed that honey had mystical and healing powers, which could overcome many diseases. It was also believed that after Honey Savior bees stop bringing honey, so you need to “break” honeycombs so that other bees wouldn’t steal your honey. On this day people paid attention to the weather and the global behaviour of nature. Traditionally, it is believed that nature is going through certain changes after this day: bees stop bringing honey to their hives, bee-keepers cut the hives, martins and swallows fly away, roses stop blooming and, of course, it gets colder. All signs of the summer’s departure.
The Savior of the Honey Feast Day is not only about honey. This holiday is also called “Mokryi Spas”, literally “Wet Spas”, because on the 14th of August 988 Grand Prince of Kiev Vladimir converted to Christianity and proceeded to baptize all of Kievan Rus’; therefore, people believed that water was blessed in all the water sources and that farmers should bathe cattle and horses on that day. Moreover, on the same day the Orthodox and the Catholic Churches also commemorate the seven Maccabean martyrs.
During the period of the three Savior days, fairs and events are organised in many Russian and Ukranian cities. In St. Petersburg, they organise an interesting honey fair called Выставка – Ярмарка “Медовый спас-2017” (Fair – exhibition Medovy Spas 2017) and this year it will take place from the 10th until the 15th August at the Saint Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex (SKK Peterburgsky, Yuria Gagarina Prospekt 8, metro station Park Pobedy). In this exhibition, you will have the opportunity to smell, taste and buy a wide variety of fresh honey from all over the country; in many stands, you will find also other tasty agricultural and monastery products. According to the exhibition program, they will also organise a contest for the best beekeeper of the fair, different masterclass and many other activities.

The Apple Feast of the Saviour[1] or Apple Spas (sometimes the Feast of the Saviour on the Hill)[2] is an Eastern Slavic folk name for the Feast of the Transfiguration, which is observed on August.
It is the second of the three Feasts of the Saviour. Taking its roots in Ukraine, this holiday just like the whole Orthodox Christianity later on was adopted in Russia. In Russian language it is Я́блочный Спа́с. One of three holidays in Russian Orthodox Christianity on which food items are blessed at church and then consumed by the faithful rather than priests, akin to the First Fruits of Judaism. The others are the Honey Feast of the Saviour, which is celebrated on August 14 (or August 1, Julian Calendar) and the Nut Feast of the Saviour, which is celebrated on August 29 (or August 16, Julian Calendar).
The holiday has a pre-Christian origin and is associated with harvesting of ripe fruits, especially apples. In East Slavic folklore, it marks the beginning of autumn and means the transfiguration of nature. In the Byzantine Empire there was tradition to bless harvested grapes during the Feast of Transfiguration. In Ukraine apples are more common than grapes, hence the name of the feast. There are processions and blessings of harvests. Usually, on that day, people from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus eat apples, apple pies, or other dishes containing apples, even if they are not Orthodox Christians.

It is easier is called the Transfiguration of the Lord Slavs and more famous now. Celebrate it on August 19. Until that time, it is impossible to eat apples, including dishes from this fruit, juices. But picking fruits in the garden, and the more the better, and then to sanctify them. Sunsets escorted with songs. Savior of the Apple feast is also called the first seninmi. Если подпалить его огнем, дым от такого яйца обладает исцеляющими свойствами, которые лечат от слепоты, убирает боль в зубах.
Яблочный спас
Так проще называется Преображение Господне славянами и больше известен сейчас. Отмечают его 19 августа. До этого времени нельзя есть яблоки, в том числе блюда из этого фрукта, соки. Но срывать плоды в саду можно и чем больше, тем лучше, а затем освящать их. Провожают закаты с песнями. Яблочный спас еще называют первыми осенинами. С 19 августа их можно есть, угощать всех друзей и родных, сирот, нищих. Так поминают умерших предков. Сами угощающие едят в последнюю очередь. К вечеру все празднующие собираются в поле провожать уходящее Солнце и лето вместе с ним.
Святки
Это целый комплекс славянских празднований. Отмечают его каждый год с 6 по 19 числа января. В Святки происходят самые разные магические обряды, с ними связывали цепь событий и примет, запретов. В Святки люди гуляли селами, занимались колядованием, различными гаданиями, ходили по гостям, делали обряды на хорошее будущее для себя и семьи. Считалось, что с Рождества до Крещения убивать животных нельзя, это к несчастью.
Сочельник
Относится к двунадесятым праздникам. тоже имеет богатую историю и древние корни. Вспоминается крещение Христа, совершенное в реке. В этот день священники совершают Великое освещение воды. Люди пьют крещенскую воду на голодный желудок. Пьют чайными ложками понемногу. Православные приносят домой и хранят в Красном углу, который имеется во всяком доме верующих людей. К тому же, можно взять обычную воду, налить в емкость и добавив немного крещенской, таким образом освятить ее.
Ильин день
Сейчас не так распространен, но тоже относится к древним традиционным празднованиям. Его отмечают 2 августа. В этот день принято резать быка или барана и накрывать большой стол для коллективных трапез. Праздник имеет древние языческие корни, изначально считался днем для Перуна, но потом его фигуру заменили Ильей – пророком, ставшим символом праздника.
Славянские праздники несут в себе корни истории и обычаев народа, они помогают лучше понять своих предков, ведь для них каждый праздник имел огромное значение. Отмечая сейчас, люди хранят историю и приобщаются к ней.
