Scene 1

Narrator:         A long time ago, a husband and a wife lived happily in a cottage at the end of a wood. But one day the wife fell ill.

At the cottage. A woman is lying at the bed speaking with poor voice.

Woman:         I believe there is only one thing that could cure me.

Man:                 What is it?

Woman:         It’s a strange herb that grew in the beautiful garden next to our cottage. Please, dear, find a way into the garden and get some of this herb. It is called rapunzel.

Man:                 Yes, dear, I’ll do it for you.

He is going away.

Scene 2

In the witch’s beautiful garden.

Witch (angrily):  What are you doing here? It is MY garden!!!

Man(praying):        Please, don’t be angry with me! My wife is ill, and there is only one thing that could cure her. It’s a strange herb that grows in your beautiful garden. It is called rapunzel.

Witch (more calmly): OK, I’ll give you some. (Giving him some herb). But you should promise to give me your first-born child in return.

Man (gladly): Everything you wish!!! Thanks a lot.

The Man is going away.

Scene 3

Man and Woman in their house

Narrator: He thought that the witch will forget about his promise soon. He took the rapunzel back to his wife and she felt better as soon as she had eaten it. A year later a baby girl was born and the witch did come and take her away.

Man and Woman are looking sadly at the Witch going away with their little daughter.

Witch: You’ll be able to watch her in the garden behind your house. I’ll call her Rapunzel.

Scene 4

A high tower with a window through which Rapunzel is looking out.  Little Birds are walking around.

Narrator: The baby grew up into a beautiful girl with long fair hair. When she was twelve years old, the witch decided to lock Rapunzel up in a high tower. The girl could not go away, but she was happy, because she could speak with birds.

Rapunzel: Hello, birds! How are you today?

Birds: We are fine, thank you. And how are you, Rapunzel?

Rapunzel: Fine, thanks! Would you like some corn?

Birds: Yes, please.

Rapunzel: Help yourself! I wish I could run and skip again like in that beautiful garden… but now I can sing to cheer myself up.

Rapunzel is singing the first verse of the song “I See the Light” (by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater) from Disney’s animated film Tangled:

All those days watching from the windows

All those years outside looking in

All that time never even knowing

Just how blind I’ve been

Now I’m here, blinking in the starlight

Now I’m here, suddenly I see

Standing here, it’s all so clear

I’m where I’m meant to be

And at last I see the light

And it’s like the fog has lifted

And at last I see the light

And it’s like the sky is new

And it’s warm and real and bright

And the world has somehow shifted

All at once everything looks different

Now that I see you

Scene 5

Narrator: Each day the witch came to see her bringing fresh food.

The Witch is shouting at the bottom of the tower.

Witch: Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair!

Narrator: And when she left, Rapunzel let down her golden hair again.

One day, the king’s son was riding through the forest when he heard Rapunzel singing.

A young Prince is passing by riding a horse.

Prince: I’ll stay here and listen for a while. Maybe I’ll find out whose voice is it…

Witch (shouting at the bottom of the tower): Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair!..

(The Witch is climbing the tower, getting out some food and leaving.)

Bye-bye, dear. (Going away)

Prince (shouting at the bottom of the tower): Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair! (The Prince is climbing the tower and is shocked to see Rapunzel there). You are the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen! What is your name?

Rapunzel: I’m Rapunzel. And who are you?

Prince: My name is Maxim. What are you doing here?

Rapunzel (merrily): Speaking to you. I live here….

A beautiful music is playing. The Prince and Rapunzel are dancing and singing.

All those days chasing down a daydream

All those years living in a blur

All that time never truly seeing

Things the way they were

Now she’s here shining in the starlight

Now she’s here, suddenly I know

If she’s here, it’s crystal clear

I’m where I’m meant to go

And at last I see the light

And it’s like the fog is lifted

And at last I see the light

And it’s like the sky is new

And it’s warm and real and bright

And the world has somehow shifted

All at once, everything is different

Now that I see you, now that I see you

The music stops and Prince is leaving.

Prince: I have to leave now but I’ll come back tomorrow.

Narrator: He told her about the world outside and they felt deeply in love.

Scene 6

At the bottom of the tower.

Witch (shouting): Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair!

Rapunzel: Hello. Why is it when you climb up my hair you are so heavy? The handsome prince who comes is much lighter than you.

Witch: (with anger) What kind of prince? You’re a bad naughty thankless girl! Get out of here! (Going away together. The Witch is leading Rapunzel to the deep forest). Now I’ll cut your hair and go away. (cutting Rapunzel’s hair). And you’ll stay here without any food or shelter.

Scene 7

At the bottom of the tower.

Narrator: That evening when the prince came by, he called out as usual.

Prince: Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair!….

Witch: Aha, so YOU are the visitor who has been coming to see my little Rapunzel. I will make sure you won’t see her again.

The Witch tries to scratch out Prince’s eyes

Prince: (covering eyes with his hands):Oh, I can’t see anything!

N: After several days of wandering and suffering he heard a voice singing.

A beautiful song of Rapunzel is heard.

Prince: Rapunzel, is this really you? It’s me, Maxim. (Rapunzel kisses his eyes). Yes, this is you, my dear! I can see you again! I love you! Let’s go to my father!

Scene 8

The King’s Palace. Prince with Rapunzel come in.

Prince: Good evening, Your Majesty! This is Rapunzel. I think she’ll be a good wife for me.

King: Hello, pleased to meet you, Rapunzel. I have never seen such a beautiful princess before. Bless you, children!

A great wedding ceremony begins. The Man and Woman see their daughter.

Man: Here is she, our daughter!

Woman: (hugging Rapunzel): My dear girl! I’m so happy to see you again.

Two Messengers come out.

Messengers: Attention! Attention! The King’s proclamation! The witch is banned from the kingdom!

Narrator: Then a grand wedding took place. Rapunzel married the prince and they lived for many years. As for the witch, she was never seen again.

Final Scene

All the characters sing the song “Rapunzel” by  Emilie Autumn:

In a courtyard

Used to sing as loud as she could

Locked away here

She’s been quiet, lovely and good

But no one listens now

She lost her voice

She had no choice

If you sing loud and clear

Someone passing by will surely hear you

No you can’t be afraid

If you ever want somebody near you

If you sing loud and clear

Someone passing by will surely hear you

No you can’t be afraid

Tore the curtain

Put her hand outside of the frame

Let her hair down

Sat all day and nobody came

But when the sun went down

The stars came out

She heard them shout

But when the sun went down

The stars came out

She heard them shout

Once upon a time there lived a man and his wife who were very unhappy because they had no children. These good people had a little window at the back of their house, which looked into the most lovely garden, full of all manner of beautiful flowers and vegetables; but the garden was surrounded by a high wall, and no one dared to enter it, for it belonged to a witch of great power, who was feared by the whole world. One day the woman stood at the
window overlooking the garden, and saw there a bed full of the finest rampion: the leaves looked so fresh and green that she longed to eat them. The desire grew day by day, and just because she knew she couldn’t possibly get any, she pined away and became quite pale and wretched. Then her husband grew alarmed and said:

`What ails you, dear wife?’

`Oh,’ she answered, `if I don’t get some rampion to eat out of the garden behind the house, I know I shall die.’

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

So at dusk he climbed over the wall into the witch’s garden, and gathered a handful of rampion leaves, but when he reached the other side he drew back in terror, for there, standing before him, was the old witch.

`How dare you,’ she said, with a wrathful glance, `climb into my garden and steal my rampion like a common thief? You shall suffer for your foolhardiness.’

`Oh!’ he implored, `forgive me; necessity alone drove me to the deed. My wife saw your rampion from her window, and conceived such a desire for it that she would certainly have died if her wish had not been gratified.’ Then the Witch’s anger was a little appeased, and she said:

`If it’s as you say, you may take as much rampion away with you as you like, but on one condition only—that you give me the child your wife will shortly bring into the world. All shall go well with it, and I will look after it like a mother.’

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

The man in his terror agreed to everything she asked, and as soon as the child was born the Witch appeared, and having given it the name of Rapunzel, which is the same as rampion, she carried it off with her, insensitive to the parents’ grief.

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

Rapunzel was the most beautiful child under the sun. When she was twelve years old the Witch shut her up in a tower, in the middle of a great wood, and the tower had neither stairs nor doors, only high up at the very top a small window. When the old Witch wanted to get in she stood underneath and called out:

`Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your golden hair,’

for Rapunzel had wonderful long hair, and it was as fine as spun gold. Whenever she heard the Witch’s voice she unloosed her plaits, and let her hair fall down out of the window, and the old Witch climbed up by it.

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

After they had lived like this for a few years, it happened one day that a Prince was riding through the wood and passed by the tower. As he drew near it he heard someone singing so sweetly that he stood still spell-bound, and listened. It was Rapunzel in her loneliness trying to while away the time by letting her sweet voice ring out into the wood. The Prince longed to see the owner of the voice, but he sought in vain for a door in the tower. He rode home,
but he was so haunted by the song he had heard that he returned every day to the wood and listened. One day, when he was standing thus behind a tree, he saw the old Witch approach and heard her call out:

`Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your golden hair.’

Then Rapunzel let down her plaits, and the Witch climbed up by them.

`So that’s the staircase, is it?’ said the Prince. `Then I too will climb it and try my luck.’

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

So on the following day, at dusk, he went to the foot of the tower and cried:

`Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your golden hair,’

and as soon as she had let it down the Prince climbed up.

At first Rapunzel was terribly frightened when a man came in, for she had never seen one before; but the Prince spoke to her so kindly, and told her at once that his heart had been so touched by her singing, that he felt he should know no peace of mind till he had seen her. Very soon Rapunzel forgot her fear, and when he asked her to marry him she consented at once.
`For,’ she thought, `he is young and handsome, and I’ll certainly be happier with him than with the old Witch.’ So she put her hand in his and said:

`Yes, I will gladly go with you, only how am I to get down out of the tower? Every time you come to see me you must bring a skein of silk with you, and I will make a ladder of them, and when it is finished I will climb down by it, and you will take me away on your horse.’

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

They arranged that till the ladder was ready, he was to come to her every evening, because the old woman was with her during the day. The old Witch, of course, knew nothing of what was going on, till one day Rapunzel, not thinking of what she was about, turned to the Witch and said:

`How is it, good mother, that you are so much harder to pull up than the young Prince? He is always with me in a moment.’

`Oh! you wicked child,’ cried the Witch. `What is this I hear? I thought I had hidden you safely from the whole world, and in spite of it you have managed to deceive me.’

In her wrath she seized Rapunzel’s beautiful hair, wound it round and round her left hand, and then grasping a pair of scissors in her right, snip snap, off it came, and the beautiful plaits lay on the ground. And, worse than this, she was so hard-hearted that she took Rapunzel to a lonely desert place, and there left her to live in loneliness and misery.

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

But on the evening of the day in which she had driven poor Rapunzel away, the Witch fastened the plaits on to a hook in the window, and when the Prince came and called out:

`Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your golden hair,’

she let them down, and the Prince climbed up as usual, but instead of his beloved Rapunzel he found the old Witch, who fixed her evil, glittering eyes on him, and cried mockingly:

`Ah, ah! you thought to find your lady love, but the pretty bird has flown and its song is dumb; the cat caught it, and will scratch out your eyes too. Rapunzel is lost to you for ever—you will never see her more.’

The Prince was beside himself with grief, and in his despair he jumped right down from the tower, and, though he escaped with his life, the thorns among which he fell pierced his eyes out. Then he wandered, blind and miserable, through the wood, eating nothing but roots and berries, and weeping and lamenting the loss of his lovely bride.

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

So he wandered about for some years, as wretched and unhappy as he could well be, and at last he came to the desert
place where Rapunzel was living. Of a sudden he heard a voice which seemed strangely familiar to him. He walked eagerly in the direction of the sound, and when he was quite close, Rapunzel recognised him and fell on his neck and wept. But two of her tears touched his eyes, and in a moment they became quite clear again, and he saw as well as he had ever done. Then he led her to his kingdom, where they were received and welcomed with great
joy, and they lived happily ever after.

Сказка Rapunzel (Рапунцель) на английском

There were once a man and a woman who had long, in vain, wished for a child. At length it appeared that God was about to grant their desire.

These people had a little window at the back of their house from which a splendid garden could be seen, which was full of the most beautiful flowers and herbs. It was, however, surrounded by a high wall, and no one dared to go into it because it belonged to an enchantress, who had great power and was dreaded by all the world.

One day the woman was standing by this window and looking down into the garden, when she saw a bed which was planted with the most beautiful rampion, and it looked so fresh and green that she longed for it. She quite pined away, and began to look pale and miserable.

Her husband was alarmed, and asked: ‘What ails you, dear wife?’

‘Ah,’ she replied, ‘if I can’t eat some of the rampion, which is in the garden behind our house, I shall die.’

The man, who loved her, thought: ‘Sooner than let your wife die, bring her some of the rampion yourself, let it cost what it will.’

At twilight, he clambered down over the wall into the garden of the enchantress, hastily clutched a handful of rampion, and took it to his wife. She at once made herself a salad of it, and ate it greedily. It tasted so good to her — so very good, that the next day she longed for it three times as much as before.

If he was to have any rest, her husband knew he must once more descend into the garden. Therefore, in the gloom of evening, he let himself down again; but when he had clambered down the wall he was terribly afraid, for he saw the enchantress standing before him.

‘How can you dare,’ said she with angry look, ‘descend into my garden and steal my rampion like a thief? You shall suffer for it!’

‘Ah,’ answered he, ‘let mercy take the place of justice, I only made up my mind to do it out of necessity. My wife saw your rampion from the window, and felt such a longing for it that she would have died if she had not got some to eat.’

The enchantress allowed her anger to be softened, and said to him: ‘If the case be as you say, I will allow you to take away with you as much rampion as you will, only I make one condition, you must give me the child which your wife will bring into the world; it shall be well treated, and I will care for it like a mother.’

The man in his terror consented to everything.

When the woman was brought to bed, the enchantress appeared at once, gave the child the name of Rapunzel, and took it away with her.

Rapunzel grew into the most beautiful child under the sun. When she was twelve years old, the enchantress shut her into a tower in the middle of a forest. The tower had neither stairs nor door, but near the top was a little window. When the enchantress wanted to go in, she placed herself beneath it and cried:

‘Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair to me.’

Rapunzel had magnificent long hair, fine as spun gold, and when she heard the voice of the enchantress, she unfastened her braided tresses, wound them round one of the hooks of the window above, and then the hair fell twenty ells down, and the enchantress climbed up by it.

After a year or two, it came to pass that the king’s son rode through the forest and passed by the tower. Then he heard a song, which was so charming that he stood still and listened. It was Rapunzel, who in her solitude passed her time in letting her sweet voice resound. The king’s son wanted to climb up to her, and looked for the door of the tower, but none was to be found. He rode home, but the singing had so deeply touched his heart, that every day he went out into the forest and listened to it.

Once when he was thus standing behind a tree, he saw that an enchantress came there, and he heard how she cried:

‘Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair to me.’

Then Rapunzel let down the braids of her hair, and the enchantress climbed up to her.

‘If that is the ladder by which one mounts, I too will try my fortune,’ said he, and the next day when it began to grow dark, he went to the tower and cried:

‘Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair to me.’

Immediately the hair fell down and the king’s son climbed up.

At first Rapunzel was terribly frightened when a man, such as her eyes had never yet beheld, came to her; but the king’s son began to talk to her quite like a friend, and told her that his heart had been so stirred that it had let him have no rest, and he had been forced to see her. Then Rapunzel lost her fear, and when he asked her if she would take him for her husband, and she saw that he was young and handsome, she thought: ‘He will love me more than old Dame Gothel does’; and she said yes, and laid her hand in his.

She said: ‘I will willingly go away with you, but I do not know how to get down. Bring with you a skein of silk every time that you come, and I will weave a ladder with it, and when that is ready I will descend, and you will take me on your horse.’

They agreed that until that time he should come to her every evening, for the old woman came by day. The enchantress remarked nothing of this, until once Rapunzel said to her: ‘Tell me, Dame Gothel, how it happens that you are so much heavier for me to draw up than the young king’s son — he is with me in a moment.’

‘Ah! you wicked child,’ cried the enchantress. ‘What do I hear you say! I thought I had separated you from all the world, and yet you have deceived me!’

In her anger she clutched Rapunzel’s beautiful tresses, wrapped them twice round her left hand, seized a pair of scissors with the right, and snip, snap, they were cut off, and the lovely braids lay on the ground. And she was so pitiless that she took poor Rapunzel into a desert where she had to live in great grief and misery.

On the same day that she cast out Rapunzel, however, the enchantress fastened the braids of hair, which she had cut off, to the hook of the window, and when the king’s son came and cried:

‘Rapunzel, Rapunzel,
Let down your hair to me.’

She let the hair down. The king’s son ascended, but instead of finding his dearest Rapunzel, he found the enchantress, who gazed at him with wicked and venomous looks.

‘Aha!’ she cried mockingly, ‘you would fetch your dearest, but the beautiful bird sits no longer singing in the nest; the cat has got it, and will scratch out your eyes as well. Rapunzel is lost to you; you will never see her again.’

The king’s son was beside himself with pain, and in his despair he leapt down from the tower. He escaped with his life, but the thorns into which he fell pierced his eyes.

He wandered quite blind about the forest, ate nothing but roots and berries, and did naught but lament and weep over the loss of his dearest wife. Thus he roamed about in misery for some years, and at length came to the desert where Rapunzel, with the twins to which she had given birth, a boy and a girl, lived in wretchedness. He heard a voice, and it seemed so familiar to him that he went towards it, and when he approached, Rapunzel knew him and fell on his neck and wept. Two of her tears wetted his eyes and they grew clear again, and he could see with them as before. He led her to his kingdom where he was joyfully received, and they lived for a long time afterwards, happy and contented.
