The first season of the superhero comedy drama television series The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix on February 15, 2019 and consisted of 10 episodes. Developed by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, the series is an adaptation of the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, both of whom serve as executive producers on the series. The first season revolves around the titular Academy (a group of adopted superhero siblings) reuniting after years apart to investigate the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of a looming apocalypse.

The first season features Elliot Page,[a] Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Cameron Britton, Mary J. Blige, John Magaro, Adam Godley, Colm Feore as the main cast, while Sheila McCarthy, Justin H. Min, Jordan Claire Robbins, Kate Walsh, and Ashley Madekwe appear in recurring roles. The first season received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Development[edit]

A film version of the comic book series The Umbrella Academy was optioned by Universal Studios. Originally, screenwriter Mark Bomback was hired to write the screenplay; Rawson Marshall Thurber reportedly replaced him in 2010.[3] There had been little talk of the film from that time. In an interview with Newsarama at the 2012 New York Comic Con, Way mentioned that there have been «good talks» and a «really good script», but that it was «kind of up to the universe».[citation needed]

On July 7, 2015, it was announced that The Umbrella Academy would be developed into a television series, rather than an original film, produced by Universal Cable Productions.[4] On July 11, 2017, it was officially announced that Netflix had greenlit a live-action series adaptation of The Umbrella Academy premiering in 2019, with Way and Bá acting as executive producers.[5][6] Jeremy Slater wrote the script for the pilot episode, and Steve Blackman serves as showrunner.[5] The first season of The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix on February 15, 2019.[7][8][9]

Casting[edit]

On November 9, 2017, Netflix confirmed that Elliot Page[a] had joined the cast and that he would play Vanya Hargreeves, also known as the White Violin.[10] On November 30, 2017, it was revealed that Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher had joined the cast as the rest of the Hargreeves siblings.[11][12] On February 12, 2018, Netflix announced that Academy Award nominee Mary J. Blige would appear in the series as the sadistic time-travel assassin Cha-Cha. Colm Feore joined the cast as Sir Reginald Hargreeves, the adoptive father of the siblings, on February 16, 2018, alongside Cameron Britton, Adam Godley and Ashley Madekwe.[13][14] On February 28, 2018, it was announced that John Magaro has been cast as a series regular character.[15]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography for the first season began on January 15, 2018, in Toronto. Gerard Way posted on his Instagram account an illustration by Fabio Moon of the cast and crew doing the first table read of the script in Toronto. He also revealed a picture of the first day on the set.[16] Additional filming took place in Hamilton, Ontario.[17]

For the theatre where Vanya performed with her violin, the crew used the Elgin Theatre, alongside the Winter Garden Theatre. Mazzoleni Concert Hall was used to represent the theatre’s exterior. The exterior of the mansion was filmed at a building in Hamilton, while the interiors were filmed in studio. The Joey & Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre was filmed for an outside scene and LIUNA Station was used for a bank robbery scene. A laboratory at the University of Toronto was filmed to represent the Meritech Prosthetics building.[17][18][19] The filming concluded on July 18, 2018.[20]

Visual effects[edit]

Visual effects for the series are handled by SpinVFX,[21] Weta Digital,[22] Folks VFX,[23] Soho VFX, Pixomondo, Deluxe VFX, Digital Film Tree, BOT VFX, Studio 8, Exceptional Minds and MARZ[24]

VFX supervisor Everet Burrell confirmed that he used traditional art techniques for early concept art and referenced great actors with iconic faces.[25] Burrell called Weta Digital, who previously worked for the rebooted Planet of the Apes series, to develop the visual effects for the character of Pogo. Ken Hall provided the motion capture for Pogo using a gray suit to later make additions to his captures to create the CGI of the chimpanzee, with Adam Godley making the facial expressions and voice acting of the character.[26]

SpinVFX confirmed that they delivered at least 563 shots for the series. To make the effects of the show, the team required a series of complex effect simulations, creature development, and massive destructions.[27]

For the effects of Number Five jumping through time and space, Burrell wanted to make the effects look organic, and liquidy, representing how much time and the world bends around him when he jumps, and how quick it should be. For these effects, he used more than 30 frames in the first episodes, however with the progress of the series, this reduced to only 10 frames.[28] To that footage, the team iterated on several kinds of spatial jump effects, all the way from heavy distortion to subtler images. The visual effects team started with some R&D tests. At the end, the final effect, called the «jelly vision», was used to make the series, with Burrell expressing: «as if you’re pushing your hand through a jelly membrane, just for a few seconds, and then it pops. It’s really, really subtle, but you get a little bit of texture, you get a little bit of striations, almost like the universe is bending as he does his spatial jumps.»[29]

In an interview with Burrell he confirmed that to develop the sequences where time is frozen, they took several background shots on location before returning to their stage to shoot the dialogue between Five and The Handler in front of a green screen. They called this effect «Three-Strip» in honor of the Technicolor process used in the 1930s.[30]

Music[edit]

The show’s score album, composed by Jeff Russo, was released on February 15, 2019, consecutively with the first season’s release. [31] During an interview he revealed that the crew needed to use a subtle hand with the score and that he wanted the score to be thematic, by not trying to push too much on the weird and too much on the horrific aspect of the show and the story.[32]

Audience viewership[edit]

On April 16, 2019, Netflix announced that the series had been streamed by over 45 million viewers on its service within its first month of release, with people at least having watched 70% percent of one episode of the series.[37][38][39] It was the third most popular TV series on Netflix in 2019, falling behind The Witcher and the third season of Stranger Things.[40]

Critical response[edit]

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 76% of 92 critic reviews are positive for the first season, with an average rating of 7.2/10. Critics’ consensus on the website reads, «The Umbrella Academy unfurls an imaginative yarn with furtive emotion and an exceptionally compelling ensemble, but the series’ dour sensibility often clashes with its splashy genre trappings.»[41] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the season a score of 61 out of 100 based on 22 critics, indicating «generally favorable reviews».[42]

Merrill Barr from Forbes praised the series, and wrote, «If you’re looking for a pulpy show with lots of action, melodramatic plotting and eccentric characters then The Umbrella Academy is your ticket.»[43] Lorraine Ali from Los Angeles Times in a positive review wrote, «The Umbrella Academy stands out among the countless other superhero series splashed across billboards and your viewing queues.»[44] Catherine Gee from the Daily Telegraph gave the series a positive response and commented, «If it does return for a second run, it would be nice to see some more genuinely fresh ideas — without the over-reliance on tried, tested and tired tropes from years past.»[45] Adam Graham from The Detroit News commented the series is a worthy enrollment, praising the series for its themes about a dysfunctional family and the characters.[46] Kambole Campbell from Little White Lies considered the series as something to enjoy with a plenty of surprises for someone who has not read the comics, and praised the way that the series interpreted the abusive parental childhood relationship and how at the end this affects the children in their adulthood.[47]

Some critics pointed out similarities between The Umbrella Academy, DC Universe’s Doom Patrol and Marvel Comics’s X-Men series, both positively and negatively.[48][49][50][51]

Some Jewish writers have criticized The Umbrella Academy for its portrayal of the Handler. In particular, her use of a Yiddish idiom and her membership in a secret society that discreetly causes catastrophic events were together perceived as an antisemitic stereotype of Jewish people secretly and malevolently controlling world events.[52] Amanda Bowman, Vice President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, wrote that «The use of a Yiddish saying by the evil boss of an organisation which controls the world’s timeline is clearly an anti-Semitic trope.»[53]

The first season of the superhero comedy drama television series The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix on February 15, 2019 and consisted of 10 episodes. Developed by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, the series is an adaptation of the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá, both of whom serve as executive producers on the series. The first season revolves around the titular Academy (a group of adopted superhero siblings) reuniting after years apart to investigate the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of a looming apocalypse.

The first season features Elliot Page,[a] Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Cameron Britton, Mary J. Blige, John Magaro, Adam Godley, Colm Feore as the main cast, while Sheila McCarthy, Justin H. Min, Jordan Claire Robbins, Kate Walsh, and Ashley Madekwe appear in recurring roles. The first season received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Development[edit]

A film version of the comic book series The Umbrella Academy was optioned by Universal Studios. Originally, screenwriter Mark Bomback was hired to write the screenplay; Rawson Marshall Thurber reportedly replaced him in 2010.[3] There had been little talk of the film from that time. In an interview with Newsarama at the 2012 New York Comic Con, Way mentioned that there have been «good talks» and a «really good script», but that it was «kind of up to the universe».[citation needed]

On July 7, 2015, it was announced that The Umbrella Academy would be developed into a television series, rather than an original film, produced by Universal Cable Productions.[4] On July 11, 2017, it was officially announced that Netflix had greenlit a live-action series adaptation of The Umbrella Academy premiering in 2019, with Way and Bá acting as executive producers.[5][6] Jeremy Slater wrote the script for the pilot episode, and Steve Blackman serves as showrunner.[5] The first season of The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix on February 15, 2019.[7][8][9]

Casting[edit]

On November 9, 2017, Netflix confirmed that Elliot Page[a] had joined the cast and that he would play Vanya Hargreeves, also known as the White Violin.[10] On November 30, 2017, it was revealed that Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher had joined the cast as the rest of the Hargreeves siblings.[11][12] On February 12, 2018, Netflix announced that Academy Award nominee Mary J. Blige would appear in the series as the sadistic time-travel assassin Cha-Cha. Colm Feore joined the cast as Sir Reginald Hargreeves, the adoptive father of the siblings, on February 16, 2018, alongside Cameron Britton, Adam Godley and Ashley Madekwe.[13][14] On February 28, 2018, it was announced that John Magaro has been cast as a series regular character.[15]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography for the first season began on January 15, 2018, in Toronto. Gerard Way posted on his Instagram account an illustration by Fabio Moon of the cast and crew doing the first table read of the script in Toronto. He also revealed a picture of the first day on the set.[16] Additional filming took place in Hamilton, Ontario.[17]

For the theatre where Vanya performed with her violin, the crew used the Elgin Theatre, alongside the Winter Garden Theatre. Mazzoleni Concert Hall was used to represent the theatre’s exterior. The exterior of the mansion was filmed at a building in Hamilton, while the interiors were filmed in studio. The Joey & Toby Tanenbaum Opera Centre was filmed for an outside scene and LIUNA Station was used for a bank robbery scene. A laboratory at the University of Toronto was filmed to represent the Meritech Prosthetics building.[17][18][19] The filming concluded on July 18, 2018.[20]

Visual effects[edit]

Visual effects for the series are handled by SpinVFX,[21] Weta Digital,[22] Folks VFX,[23] Soho VFX, Pixomondo, Deluxe VFX, Digital Film Tree, BOT VFX, Studio 8, Exceptional Minds and MARZ[24]

VFX supervisor Everet Burrell confirmed that he used traditional art techniques for early concept art and referenced great actors with iconic faces.[25] Burrell called Weta Digital, who previously worked for the rebooted Planet of the Apes series, to develop the visual effects for the character of Pogo. Ken Hall provided the motion capture for Pogo using a gray suit to later make additions to his captures to create the CGI of the chimpanzee, with Adam Godley making the facial expressions and voice acting of the character.[26]

SpinVFX confirmed that they delivered at least 563 shots for the series. To make the effects of the show, the team required a series of complex effect simulations, creature development, and massive destructions.[27]

For the effects of Number Five jumping through time and space, Burrell wanted to make the effects look organic, and liquidy, representing how much time and the world bends around him when he jumps, and how quick it should be. For these effects, he used more than 30 frames in the first episodes, however with the progress of the series, this reduced to only 10 frames.[28] To that footage, the team iterated on several kinds of spatial jump effects, all the way from heavy distortion to subtler images. The visual effects team started with some R&D tests. At the end, the final effect, called the «jelly vision», was used to make the series, with Burrell expressing: «as if you’re pushing your hand through a jelly membrane, just for a few seconds, and then it pops. It’s really, really subtle, but you get a little bit of texture, you get a little bit of striations, almost like the universe is bending as he does his spatial jumps.»[29]

In an interview with Burrell he confirmed that to develop the sequences where time is frozen, they took several background shots on location before returning to their stage to shoot the dialogue between Five and The Handler in front of a green screen. They called this effect «Three-Strip» in honor of the Technicolor process used in the 1930s.[30]

Music[edit]

The show’s score album, composed by Jeff Russo, was released on February 15, 2019, consecutively with the first season’s release. [31] During an interview he revealed that the crew needed to use a subtle hand with the score and that he wanted the score to be thematic, by not trying to push too much on the weird and too much on the horrific aspect of the show and the story.[32]

Audience viewership[edit]

On April 16, 2019, Netflix announced that the series had been streamed by over 45 million viewers on its service within its first month of release, with people at least having watched 70% percent of one episode of the series.[37][38][39] It was the third most popular TV series on Netflix in 2019, falling behind The Witcher and the third season of Stranger Things.[40]

Critical response[edit]

On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 76% of 92 critic reviews are positive for the first season, with an average rating of 7.2/10. Critics’ consensus on the website reads, «The Umbrella Academy unfurls an imaginative yarn with furtive emotion and an exceptionally compelling ensemble, but the series’ dour sensibility often clashes with its splashy genre trappings.»[41] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the season a score of 61 out of 100 based on 22 critics, indicating «generally favorable reviews».[42]

Merrill Barr from Forbes praised the series, and wrote, «If you’re looking for a pulpy show with lots of action, melodramatic plotting and eccentric characters then The Umbrella Academy is your ticket.»[43] Lorraine Ali from Los Angeles Times in a positive review wrote, «The Umbrella Academy stands out among the countless other superhero series splashed across billboards and your viewing queues.»[44] Catherine Gee from the Daily Telegraph gave the series a positive response and commented, «If it does return for a second run, it would be nice to see some more genuinely fresh ideas — without the over-reliance on tried, tested and tired tropes from years past.»[45] Adam Graham from The Detroit News commented the series is a worthy enrollment, praising the series for its themes about a dysfunctional family and the characters.[46] Kambole Campbell from Little White Lies considered the series as something to enjoy with a plenty of surprises for someone who has not read the comics, and praised the way that the series interpreted the abusive parental childhood relationship and how at the end this affects the children in their adulthood.[47]

Some critics pointed out similarities between The Umbrella Academy, DC Universe’s Doom Patrol and Marvel Comics’s X-Men series, both positively and negatively.[48][49][50][51]

Some Jewish writers have criticized The Umbrella Academy for its portrayal of the Handler. In particular, her use of a Yiddish idiom and her membership in a secret society that discreetly causes catastrophic events were together perceived as an antisemitic stereotype of Jewish people secretly and malevolently controlling world events.[52] Amanda Bowman, Vice President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, wrote that «The use of a Yiddish saying by the evil boss of an organisation which controls the world’s timeline is clearly an anti-Semitic trope.»[53]

On October 1, 1989, 43 ladies around the globe conceive an offspring at the same time, regardless of none of them giving any indication of pregnancy until work started. Seven of the kids are received by unusual very rich person Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and transformed into a hero group through what he calls «The Umbrella Academy». Hargreeves gives the kids numbers as opposed to names however they in the end are named by their caretaker robot mother, Grace, as: Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five (his solitary name), Ben and Vanya. While giving six of his kids something to do battling wrongdoing, Reginald keeps Vanya separated from her kin’s exercises, as she shows no forces of her own…

На Netflix выходит третий сезон «Академии „Амбрелла“» — одного из самых популярных эксклюзивов стрим-сервиса. Если вдруг вы забыли, что было в предыдущих сериях, или думаете, стоит ли их смотреть, вот наш экспресс-гид о том, кто есть кто в сериале и почему он такой крутой.

Сериал снят по комиксу Джерарда Уэя, основателя популярной эмо-группы My Chemical Romance. Экранизация получилась вольной, но верной духу первоисточника, такой же рок-н-ролльной и эмоциональной. Больше всего «Академия „Амбрелла“» напоминает «Роковой патруль»: как и хит DC, это смесь из супергеройского экшена, абсурдистской комедии и драмы про дисфункциональную семью.

О чем это

В 1989 году в разных уголках планеты одновременно родились 43 необычных младенца, при этом днем раньше их матери даже не были беременны. Многих из детей сразу же бросили, кого-то убили от греха подальше, но семерых взял к себе на воспитание таинственный аристократ Реджинальд Харгривз. Под его присмотром чудо-дети раскрыли в себе сверхспособности и сформировали настоящую супергеройскую команду. Вундеркинды ловили преступников, предотвращали катаклизмы и мелькали на первых полосах газет, пока не выросли. Гибель одного из своих, необъяснимое исчезновение другого, а также накопившийся вагон взаимных обид и претензий привели к распаду команды.

Пятеро уцелевших выпускников Академии «Амбрелла» (так Харгривз, который когда-то торговал зонтиками, назвал свой особняк) разбрелись по свету и попытались начать жизнь с чистого листа (получилось так себе). Весть о смерти наставника заставила их вновь собраться вместе, а последовавшие за ней странные события — вспомнить подзабытые супергеройские навыки.

Кто все эти люди (и не только)

№ 1 — Лютер (Том Хоппер)

Номинальный лидер команды. Исполнительный, ответственный, невыносимо правильный здоровяк, искренне преданный сэру Харгривзу. Из-за сыворотки на основе обезьяньей ДНК стал похож на гориллу. Несколько лет провел в ссылке на Луне, думая, что выполняет важную миссию. Влюблен в сводную сестру Эллисон.

№ 2 — Диего (Дэвид Кастанеда)

Сорвиголова с комплексом героя (диагностированным). Умеет силой мысли менять траекторию полета объектов — например, своих метательных ножей. В качестве народного мстителя борется с преступностью. За бравадой и сарказмом прячет неуверенность в себе.

№ 3 — Эллисон (Эмми Рэвер-Лэмпман)

Актриса, модель и светская львица. Умеет манипулировать чужим сознанием. Может убедить противника в чем угодно: сложить оружие, забыть собственное имя или перестать дышать. Разведена и лишена права видеться с дочкой. Испытывает симпатию к Лютеру.

№ 4 — Клаус (Роберт Шиэн)

Разгильдяй, балагур, алкоголик, наркоман, а также сильнейший медиум. Способен не только разговаривать с призраками, но и делать их временно материальными, правда, лишь в трезвом состоянии (то есть редко). Регулярно общается с Беном — тем самым погибшим участником команды.

№ 5 (Эйдан Галлахер)

Ворчливый старик в теле ребенка и единственный участник команды, так и не получивший имени. Умеет перемещаться в пространстве и времени. Застрял в постапокалиптическом будущем, где выживал 45 лет, пока его не завербовала в качестве киллера Комиссия — тайная организация, следящая за сохранностью временной линии (как в «Локи», только методы пожестче). Дезертировал в настоящее и почему-то помолодел до состояния подростка. Испытывает нездоровую привязанность к манекену по прозвищу Долорес и называет ее своей женой. Убил Кеннеди.

№ 6 — Бен (Джастин Х. Мин)

Погибший воспитанник Академии. При жизни умел отращивать длинные щупальца. Будучи призраком, присматривает за Клаусом и по мере сил пытается уберечь того от неприятностей.

№ 7 — Ваня (Эллиот Пейдж)

Закомплексованная и крайне ранимая девушка. Обладает сверхспособностями чудовищной разрушительной мощи, о которых не подозревает из-за заблокированных воспоминаний. Играет на скрипке. Устроила апокалипсис. Дважды.

Реджинальд Харгривз (Колм Фиор)

Основатель Академии «Амбрелла». Пришелец с погибшей планеты, маскирующийся под богача-аристократа. Терпеть не может земных детей, но приютил семерых из стратегических соображений. Высокомерен, требователен, скрытен.

Пого (Адам Годли)

Генетически модифицированная говорящая обезьяна. Мажордом Академии «Амбрелла» и верный слуга сэра Харгривза. Искренне привязан к воспитанникам.

Грейс (Джордан Клер Роббинс)

Андроид в виде миловидной блондинки средних лет. Заменила ученикам Харгривза мать. Особенно близка с Диего.

Ча-Ча (Мэри Джей Блайдж) и Хейзел (Камерон Бриттон)

Чистильщики Комиссии, посланные по следу № 5. Ча-Ча верна своему делу и без колебаний убьет любого, кто встанет на пути. Хейзел уважает напарницу, но давно мечтает уйти на покой.

Глава Комиссии. Расчетливая, безжалостная и амбициозная дама.

Леонард (Джон Магаро)

Настоящее имя — Харольд Дженкинс. Родился в один день с аномальными детьми, но никаких сверхспособностей не получил. Озлобленный фанат Академии. Убил своего отца-алкоголика, за что отсидел 12 лет, а после освобождения взял псевдоним. Сблизился с Ваней в надежде каким-то образом украсть ее силы.

Что произошло в двух сезонах

Команда собирается на похороны Реджинальда Харгривза. Внезапно из портала появляется № 5, пропавший 17 лет назад. Он утверждает, что прибыл из будущего и совсем скоро грядет апокалипсис.

Лютер берется расследовать смерть отца. Сперва он подозревает Диего, затем — робота Грейс, но ни одна из версий не подтверждается.

Ваня знакомится с Леонардом и сразу же становится жертвой его манипуляций.

С его помощью она выясняет, что все эти годы у нее тоже были суперспособности, но их подавляли лекарствами, а Эллисон по указу Харгривза внушила сестре, что она «обыкновенная».

Параллельно с этим № 5 пытается сладить с Комиссией, обхитрить Куратора и выяснить причины апокалипсиса.

Оказывается, Реджинальд Харгривз подстроил собственную смерть, чтобы собрать выпускников «Амбреллы» вместе в преддверии большой катастрофы.

Ваня впадает в неистовство, ранит Эллисон, а после убивает Леонарда, Пого и Грейс, а также уничтожает Академию.

Команда пытается остановить сестру, но в результате та случайно взрывает Луну, обрекая на гибель все живое. За секунду до апокалипсиса № 5 перемещает братьев и сестер в прошлое.

Герои оказываются в Далласе 1960-х, но все в разных годах.

Лютер стал боксером, Диего заперт в психушке, Эллисон вышла замуж за темнокожего активиста, Клаус основал религиозный культ, а Ваня потеряла память и устроилась помощницей на ферму супружеской пары.

№ 5 узнал, что беда последовала за Харгривзами: их появление изменило ход истории, в результате чего разгорелась ядерная война.

Собравшись вместе, выпускники решают, что для предотвращения очередного конца света им нужно спасти президента Кеннеди.

Они находят Реджинальда Харгривза, но тот их не узнает и помогать отказывается. Однако идея Академии для одаренных детей его интригует.

Команда выясняет, что причиной апокалипсиса вновь должна стать Ваня: она устроит взрыв во время президентского визита, что расценят как советскую диверсию.

Героям удается предотвратить трагедию, спасти Ваню и одолеть вездесущую Комиссию. Кеннеди все же погибает (в этот раз не от руки № 5), но войны удается избежать.

Однако, вернувшись в 2019-й, команда обнаруживает, что сработал «эффект бабочки». Теперь на месте Академии «Амбрелла» стоит некая Академия «Спэрроу», у Реджинальда Харгривза совсем другие воспитанники, а Бен все еще жив, но не знаком с Клаусом и остальными.

В чем фишка

Как мы уже сказали, «Академия „Амбрелла“» ловко смешивает супергероику в духе «Людей Икс» с пронзительной семейной драмой. Фантастические, порой откровенно абсурдные обстоятельства в сериале сочетаются с тонким психологизмом. Например, человек-горилла Лютер в середине первого сезона выясняет, что его многолетняя экспедиция на Луну была всего лишь красиво обставленной ссылкой: черствый и раздражительный Харгривз просто отправил сына с глаз долой. Это открытие ранит Лютера, но вместе с тем помогает ему наконец-то повзрослеть и выйти из отцовской тени. Или взять, к примеру, Клауса, который из-за неосторожного использования машины времени оказывается в самом горниле вьетнамской войны. В кратчайшие сроки безалаберный эгоист успевает познать цену жизни, полюбить другого человека и потерять его на поле боя. Из своего спонтанного путешествия медиум возвращается совсем другим — морально искалеченным, но вместе с тем более сильным.

Тема преодоления травмы лейтмотивом идет через оба сезона. В первом выпускники Академии пытаются разобраться со своим настоящим, а во втором заново переживают прошлое (больше метафорически). Так, Эллисон, чей первый брак развалился, снова выходит замуж и старается не повторить прежних ошибок. А № 5 буквально сталкивается с прежней версией себя — киллером на службе Комиссии.

А еще в «Академии „Амбрелла“» очень много хорошей музыки. На фоне экшена и драматических сцен звучат Queen, The Doors, Нина Симон, Фрэнк Синатра, тема из «Призрака оперы» и много чего еще. Ну а как иначе экранизировать комикс, написанный рок-звездой?

Чего ждать от третьего сезона

В новом сезоне выпускники команды «Амбрелла» столкнутся не только с самими собой из параллельной временной линии — командой «Спэрроу», но и с другими одаренными детьми. Среди них — сверхсилач Маркус (Джастин Корнвэлл), обладающая даром телекинеза Слоан (Дженезис Родригес) и повелительница птиц Фей (Бритни Олдфорд). Более того, в новой временной линии вернется Пого, погибший из-за Вани в первом сезоне. Теперь он работает татуировщиком и сотрудничает с № 5. Также наши герои выяснят, что созданный ими временной парадокс поглощает все существующее и у них есть несколько дней, чтобы это исправить.

Но, пожалуй, главная интрига в данном случае строится не вокруг сюжета (хотя он тоже обещает множество сюрпризов и парадоксов), а вокруг одной из центральных звезд. В промежуток между сезонами Эллен Пейдж, исполнительница роли Вани, прошла через транспереход, став Эллиотом Пейджем — это будет его экранный дебют. Событие во многом историческое, ведь известных трансгендерных персон в мейнстриме практически нет. Ваня в сериале превратится в Виктора, но, каким образом это произойдет и почему, пока неизвестно.

Ну и, конечно, ждем больше зрелищного экшена, больше драмы и больше рок-н-ролла. В конце концов, за это «Академию „Амбрелла“» и любят.
