The Gift Of The Magi

Confere: One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result. Only $1.87 to buy a present for Jim. Her Jim. Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.

Della: Will you buy my hair?

Madame: I buy hair. Take your hat off and let’s have a sight at the looks of it.

Confere: Down rippled the brown cascade.

Madame: Twenty dollars.

Della: Give it to me quickly.

Confere: Oh, and the next two hours she was looking for Jim’s present. She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. It was a platinum fob chain. It was even worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be Jim’s.

Della: «If Jim doesn’t kill me before he takes a second look at me, he’ll say I look like a Coney Island chorus girl. But what could I do—oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty- seven cents?»

Confere: At 7 o’clock the coffee was made and the frying-pan was on the back of the stove hot and ready to cook the chops. Jim was never late. Della doubled the fob chain in her hand and sat on the corner of the table near the door that he always entered.

Della: Please God, make him think I am still pretty.

Della: Jim, darling, don’t look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold because I couldn’t have lived through Christmas without giving you a present. It’ll grow out again—you won’t mind, will you? I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast. Say `Merry Christmas!’ Jim, and let’s be happy. You don’t know what a nice— what a beautiful, nice gift I’ve got for you.

Jim: You’ve cut off your hair?

Della: Cut it off and sold it. Don’t you like me just as well, anyhow? I’m me without my hair!

Jim: You say your hair is gone?

Della: Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered, but nobody could ever count my love for you.

Confere: Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table.

Jim: Don’t make any mistake, Dell. I don’t think there’s anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But if you’ll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first.

Confere: There lay The Combs—the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims.

Della: Oh, oh, Jim, you haven’t seen your present! Isn’t it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You’ll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.

Jim: Dell, let’s put our Christmas presents away and keep them a while. They’re too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now I suppose you can put the chops on.

Confere: The magi, as you know, were wise men — who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. And here we see two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest.

Narrator: I`m going to tell you the story about the poor, the tradition of giving, the north wind and the love.

Just imagine the poorly furnished room with a chair or two and a chest of drawers and a simple bed. In the room a man and a woman are discussing Christmas. He is playing with a watch and her principle feature is long beautiful hair.

Mr. James Dillingham Young.

The name»Dillingham» had been flung to the breeze during a former period of prosperity when its possessor was being paid $30 per week. Now, when the income was shrunk to $20, the letters of «Dillingham» looked blurred, as though they were thinking seriously of contracting to a modest and unassuming D. But whenever Mr. James Dillingham Young came home and reached his flat above he was called «Jim» and greatly hugged by Mrs. James Dillingham Young, Della for short. Which is all very good.

Della: Oh, Jim, your lunch. Tomorrow will be Christmas and there`s not a single Christmas card in the mail-box. Ana I`ve wanted so much for you…

Jim: Sh… It will pass, Dell, and by the looks on my grandfather`s watch, you`ve got just enough time to make it to the butcher`s. Bye, Dell.

Narrator: Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.

Had the Queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out of the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty’s jewels and gifts.

Had King Solomon been the janitor, with all his treasures piled up in the basement, Jim would have pulled out his watch every time he passed, just to see him pluck at his beard from envy.

Della: To-morrow will be Christmas Day, and I have only $1.87 with which to buy Jim a present. I have been saving every penny I could for Expenses have been greater than I have calculated. Months, with this result. Twenty dollars a week doesn’t go far. They always are. Only $1.87 to buy a present for Jim. My Jim. Many a happy hour I have spent planning for something nice for him. Something fine and rare and sterling — something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honour of being owned by Jim.

Narrator:      There was clearly nothing left to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. Which instigates the moral reflection that life is made up of sobs, sniffles, and smiles, with sniffles predominating.

Della: But crying without reason won`t help a whip.

Narrator: So now Della’s beautiful hair fell about her, rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters. It reached below her knee and made itself almost a garment for her.

‘Mme Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds.

Della:Exuse me, Madam! Will you buy my hair?»

Mme Sofronie: We`ve closed.Come back later!

Della: Oh, please, will you buy my hair today.

Mme Sofronie: All right, take off your shawl and let`s have a sight of a look at it.

20 dollars. All right then 21, and not a penny more.

Della: All rght, I`ll take it. Give it to me quick.

Cut my hair off.

In the shop.

Della: Exuse me, Mrs. Selgonton.

Shop assistant: Hello, Della. Have you made up your mind yet?

Della:I`d like to buy that watch fob. How much is it?

Shop assistant:Well, how much have you got, Della?

Della:I`ve got 22 dollars and 87 cents. Oh, Jim might be very proud to check the time with that chain on his watch. Sometimes he doesn`t like it as he`s got only an old leather strap. I`ve been saving for months, I even sold my hair.

Shop assistant:Well, Della, you are in luck. This fob is 22 dollars even.

Della:Oh, I`ll take it.

The shopwindow with combs.

Jim:Dell seems to stop staring at that window almost every day. It`s so important combs that have cut her fancy. But it`ll be a warm day in December before she`ll be able to afford them on my street-car conductor`s pay. Too bad, if there is with hair fit enough to wear those fancy combs, it`s Della. But there`s always someone can do. I`ll sell my watch and buy them for her.

In Jim and Della`s apartment.

Della: If Jim doesn’t kill me before he takes a second look at me, he’ll say I look like a Coney Island chorus girl. But what could I do — oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents? Please, God, make him think I am still pretty.»

Della: Jim, darling don’t look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold it because I couldn’t have lived through Christmas without giving you a present. It’ll grow out again — you won’t mind, will you? I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast. Say ‘Merry Christmas!’ Jim, and let’s be happy. Jim: You say your hair is gone?

Della: You needn’t look for it. It’s sold, I tell you — sold and gone, too. It’s Christmas Eve, boy. Be good to me, for it went for you. Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered, but nobody could ever count my love for you. Shall I put the chops on, Jim?

Jim: Dell, let’s put our Christmas presents away and keep ’em a while. They’re too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on.

Narrator: The magi, as you know, were wise men — wonderfully wise men — who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. Of all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.

Characters: Narrator, Della, Store hostess, Jim

Narrator: One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas.

Della: I had been saving every penny I could for months, with this result. Only one dollar and eighty-seven cents to buy a present for Jim. My Jim.

Narrator: There was clearly nothing left to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it. (Пауза)  Della finished her cry. Suddenly she whirled from the couch and stood before the glass. (Делла вытаскивает шпильки, распускает волосы) Музыка.

Narrator: Oh, and the next two hours tripped by on rosy wings. She was ransacking the stores for Jim’s present. Музыка. She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. There was no other like it in any of the stores, and she had turned all of them inside out.

Della: (с короткой стрижкой) A platinum fob chain for Jim’s gold watch. It is like him: quietness and value. Oh, yes, quietness and value. It costs twenty-one dollars. And I have seventy – eight cents. (Танцует) With that chain on his watch Jim might be properly anxious about the time in any company. (Делла смотрится в зеркало, вспоминает, что волос нет) Jim will kill me! But what could I do — oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents? Narrator: Jim’s eyes were fixed upon Della, and there was an expression in them that she could not read, and it terrified her.

It’ll grow out again — you won’t mind, will you? Say ‘Merry Christmas!’ Jim, and let’s be happy. You don’t know what a nice-what a beautiful gift I’ve got for you.

Narrator: Beautiful combs, pure tortoise-shell, with jeweled rims were expensive. And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone.

Scene 3. Jim and Shop assistant

Jim: I love my dear Della so much. I can’t imagine my life without her. Where
should I find any money for my present? Christmas is such a great holiday! But I have no
money. I have nothing…just my watch…But I must solve the problem. I have seen the
buying up just round the corner. There I will be able to sell my watch and get some money
for the present. “

He came into the shop.

Shop assistant: Could I help you? What do you want?

Jim: I would like to sell my watch. How much does it cost?

Shop assistant: I think 20 dollars.

Jim: It is much more expensive. Really.

Shop assistant: I think 20 dollars. That’s enough money for it. Will you sell it?

We are going to close. Soon it will be Christmas…

Jim: Yes. I awfully need some money.

Jim went away to look for a present.

Scene 4. Della and Jim

Della is greeting her husband.

«Jim, darling,» Della cried, «don’t look at me that way. I had my
hair cut off and sold because I couldn’t have lived through Christmas without giving you a
present. It’ll grow out again—you won’t mind, will you? I just had to do it. My hair
grows awfully fast. Say `Merry Christmas!’ Jim, and let’s be happy. You don’t know what a
nice— what a beautiful, nice gift I’ve got for you.»

«You’ve cut off your hair?» asked Jim, laboriously, as if he had not
arrived at that patent fact yet even after the hardest mental labor.

«Cut it off and sold it,» said Della. «Don’t you like me just as
well, anyhow? I’m me without my hair, aren’t I?»

Jim looked about the room curiously.

«You say your hair is gone?» he said, with an air almost of idiocy.

«You needn’t look for it,» said Della. «It’s sold, I tell
you—sold and gone, too. It’s Christmas Eve, boy. Be good to me, for it went for you.

Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table.

«Don’t make any mistake, Dell,» he said, «about me. I don’t think
there’s anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like
my girl any less. But if you’ll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a
while at first.»

Della tore at the string and paper. And then an ecstatic scream of joy; and then, alas!
a quick feminine change to hysterical tears and wails, necessitating the immediate
employment of all the comforting powers of the lord of the flat.

For there lay The Combs—the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped
long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims—just
the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and
her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession.
And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments
were gone.

Della: «My hair grows so fast, Jim!»

And then Della leaped up and cried, «Oh, oh!» Jim, you have not
seen your beautiful present yet.

She held it out to him eagerly. The dull precious metal seemed to flash with a
reflection of her bright and ardent spirit.

Della:»Isn’t it dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You’ll have to
look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks
on it.»

Jim tumbled down on the couch and put his hands under the back of his head and smiled.

«Dell,» said he, «let’s put our Christmas presents away and keep
’em a while. They’re too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to
buy your combs”

Comp.:  This is a story about the gift of
magi by O’Henry.                                        

                                      
Della is standing at the table  and counting money.

Della: One dollar and eighty-seven cents.
That is all. And sixty cents in pennies. What shall I do?

                                       She
sits down on the little sofa and cries.

Della: They say that life is made up of
sobs and smiles. But there are more sobs then smiles in it.

Comp.: While the mistress of that home is
miserable, let’s take a look at the home. A  furnished flat at eighty dollars per week.  In the hall below was a
letter-box into which no letter would go, but there was a card with the name Mr
James Dillingham Young. But whenever Mr James D Y  would come home and reach
his flat above he would be called  “Jim” and met by Mrs James D Y, already had
been introduced to you as Della.

                                    Della
finishes her crying and touches her cheeks  with the power rag.

Della: Let’s do the sum. It will be
Christmas tomorrow and I have only one dollar and eighty –seven cents to buy
Jim a present.  I have been saving every penny I could for months and that is
the result. Twenty dollars a week is not a big sum. Only one dollar and
eighty-seven cents to buy Jim a present. I have planned for something just a
little bit near to being worthy of my Jim.

                                She stands
in front of the mirror, pulls down her hair and let it fail to it’s full
length.

Comp.: Now there were two dear things of
the Jams D Y’s. And they were proud  of them. One was Jim’s gold watch that had
been his father’s and grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.

                               She does it
up again nervously and quickly. She  puts on her old brown jacket and her old
brown hat and runs out.

                                   A table
“M-me  Sofronie  Hair Goods of All Kinds”.

M-me : Can I help you, Madam?

Della:  Will you buy my hair?

M-me: I buy hair. Take your hat off and
let’s have a look at it.

                                  Della
pulls down her hair.

M-me (taking her hair with a hand): Twenty
dollars.

Della: Give it to me quickly.(they go
away).

                                      At
Della’s place.

Comp.: And the next two hours were passing
by on rosy wings. Della  visited many shops looking for Jim’s present. She
found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. There was
other like it in many of the shops, and she had turned all of them inside out.
It was a gold chain , simple , but looking very expensive. It was ever worthy
of the Watch. As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be Jim’s. Twenty one
dollars they took from her for it, and she went home with the eighty-seven
cents. But with that chain Jim might take this watch out of the pocket in any
company.

                              Della comes
in, takes a comb and stands in front of the mirror.

Della: If Jim doesn’t kill me before he
takes a second look at me, he’ll say I look like a schoolboy. But what could I
do, what could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents.

            She is setting the table, the
clock strikes  seven,  she sits in the armchair with the chain in her hand. Jim
is knocking at the door.

Della: Please, God, make him think I’m
still pretty.

                                                                 
Jim comes in.

Comp..: Jim didn’t move. He looked at
Della, and there was an expression in his eyes that she couldn’t read and it
terrified her. It was not anger. Neither  surprise,  nor horror.  He just
looked at her with that strange expression on his face.

Della: Jim, darling, don’t look at me that
way. I had my hair cut off and sold it couldn’t have lived through  Christmas  without 
giving you a present. I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast. Say
“Merry Christmas”, Jim, and let’s be happy. I have a very nice present for you.

Jim:  You’ve cut off your hair?

Della: Cut it off and sold it. Don’t you
like me just as well? I’m me without my hair.

Jim: You say your hair is gone?

Della: You needn’t look for it. It’s sold.
I tell you – sold and gone too. It’s Christmas. Be good to me. May be the hairs
of my head are numbered but nobody could ever count my love for you, Jim. Shall
I put the chops on?

                                 Jim takes
a package out of the pocket and puts it upon the table.

Jim: Don’t make any mistake, Dell, about
me. I don’t think there’s anything in the way of the haircut that could make me
love my wife any less. But if you unwrap  that package you may understand
everything.

                                   Della
ties a string and paper, screams of joy and begins to cry.

Comp.: For there lay the Combs – the set of
combs, that Della had wanted very vuch looking at them in a shop-window. There
were expensive combs, she knew and she didn’t hope to have them. And now  they
were hers but her hair was gone.

Della (taking them and smiling): My hair
grows fast, Jim. ( jumping  up) Oh, Oh! But you haven’t seen my present   yet.

                                      She
holds it out to him upon her open palm.

Della: Is not it nice, Jim? I hunted all
over town to find it. You’ll have to look at the time a hundred times a day
now. Give me your watch, I want to see how it looks on it.

Jim: Dell, let’s put our Christmas presents
away and keep them a little. They are too nice to be used just at present. I
sold the watch to get the money to buy you combs. And now you may put the chops
on.

The Gift Of The Magi

Confere: One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Three times Della counted it. One dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be Christmas. She had been saving every penny she could for months, with this result. Only $1.87 to buy a present for Jim. Her Jim. Now, there were two possessions of the James Dillingham Youngs in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair.

Della: Will you buy my hair?

Madame: I buy hair. Take your hat off and let’s have a sight at the looks of it.

Confere: Down rippled the brown cascade.

Madame: Twenty dollars.

Della: Give it to me quickly.

Confere: Oh, and the next two hours she was looking for Jim’s present. She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else. It was a platinum fob chain. It was even worthy of The Watch. As soon as she saw it she knew that it must be Jim’s.

Della: «If Jim doesn’t kill me before he takes a second look at me, he’ll say I look like a Coney Island chorus girl. But what could I do—oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty- seven cents?»

Confere: At 7 o’clock the coffee was made and the frying-pan was on the back of the stove hot and ready to cook the chops. Jim was never late. Della doubled the fob chain in her hand and sat on the corner of the table near the door that he always entered.

Della: Please God, make him think I am still pretty.

Della: Jim, darling, don’t look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold because I couldn’t have lived through Christmas without giving you a present. It’ll grow out again—you won’t mind, will you? I just had to do it. My hair grows awfully fast. Say `Merry Christmas!’ Jim, and let’s be happy. You don’t know what a nice— what a beautiful, nice gift I’ve got for you.

Jim: You’ve cut off your hair?

Della: Cut it off and sold it. Don’t you like me just as well, anyhow? I’m me without my hair!

Jim: You say your hair is gone?

Della: Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered, but nobody could ever count my love for you.

Confere: Jim drew a package from his overcoat pocket and threw it upon the table.

Jim: Don’t make any mistake, Dell. I don’t think there’s anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But if you’ll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first.

Confere: There lay The Combs—the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jewelled rims.

Della: Oh, oh, Jim, you haven’t seen your present! Isn’t it a dandy, Jim? I hunted all over town to find it. You’ll have to look at the time a hundred times a day now. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.

Jim: Dell, let’s put our Christmas presents away and keep them a while. They’re too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now I suppose you can put the chops on.

Confere: The magi, as you know, were wise men — who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. And here we see two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest.

Цели урока:

учебная – систематизировать лексические навыки через чтение и письмо; коммуникативная – обмен мнениями о содержании текста и своем опыте; воспитательная – утверждение своей позиции по поводу подарков на праздники и отношения к ним;

компетентностная – осмысление собственного опыта.

Задачи:

активизация лексики по теме «Известные писатели и поэты»;

расширение навыков работы с текстом;

совершенствование умений выражать свое мнение и принимать точку зрения другого;

делать самооценку своей работы.

Оборудование: Рабочая тетрадь с текстом, доска, словари, листы самооценки.(Приложение 2).

Информация об учащихся: группа 13 человек, уровень языка — средний, умеют работать в парах, в группах, компетентностные навыки — имеют различный уровень сформированности.

Прием РКМЧП: Чтение с остановками, Синквейн.

Ход урока

1.Приветственное слово учителя.

Небольшая ремарка по поводу какого- нибудь праздника и подарков. (2 мин.)

2.Вхождение в тему с помощью записи на доске названий подарков, которые знают присутствующие. Таким образом, появляется понятие «Подарки к празднику». (4 мин.)

3.Объяснение учащимися смысла этого понятия и предположения по поводу рассказа “The gift of the Magi”

учитель фиксирует предположения на доске. (3 мин.)

4.Чтение первой части рассказа. (5 мин) Первая остановка

« Вопиющая нищета» и «красноречиво молчащая бедность». Есть ли разница в значении

этих понятий? В чем она состоит? Слова «нищета» и «бедность» в словаре как синонимы.

Почему же слова—синонимы в тексте противопоставляются? Нищие – люди, к сожалению,

без чувства собственного достоинства. Джим и Делла отличаются достоинством и

скромностью. С помощью еще, каких ИВС создается интерьер? (слайд) Зачем автор

использует ИВС? Обратимся к страницам произведения. Стр.243. Дела кончила

плакать…Почему в канун Рождества, праздничной суеты автор использует повтор

цветового прилагательного «серый». Give your associations with the word “grey”. (routine,

— And now we return to the language of our heroes. The third detail of the O’Henry story is heroes’

portrait. Let’s find and read Della’s description. And answer the questions.

1. What treasure did Della have? (Hair)

2. What comparisons did the writer use to describe Della’s treasure? (Like a cascade of brown

waters, almost a garment for her)

3. What did Della decide to do with her hair? (To cut)

4. Why did she do that? (She wanted to give a present for Jim)

as if he had not arrived at that patent fact yet, even after the hardest mental labour – как будто,

несмотря на усиленную работу мозга, он все еще не мог осознать этот факт…

with an air almost of idiocy – с бессмысленной настойчивостью…

Out of his trance Jim seemed quickly to wake – и Джим вышел из оцепинения…

And now let’s answer my questions.

 Why was he shocked? He was shocked because he understood a) he didn’t like Della b) the

 Was he sorry about his watch? No.

 What was important for Jim on the Christmas Eve? (To give Della a present).

So, we can say that Jim as Della couldn’t leave each other without a present.

Юмор в рассказе.

В чем проявляется юмор в рассказе? Find, please, at the end of the text the word the writer used to

show that the situation was humorous. (smile)

За анекдотической ситуацией скрыт глубокий жизненный смысл.

4. Итог урока. (Чтение стр. 248 до конца) (слайд 25). Ребята, посмотрите на прочитанный

отрывок и скажите, сколько раз встречаются однокоренные слова слову дар и мудрый. Зачем

автор употребляет столько однокоренных слов? —Чтобы показать, что Дела и Джим самые

настоящие мудрецы, их можно даже назвать волхвами.

Задание: предложите возможные варианты названия текста по—русски и по—английски.

O. Henry is the pen name of William Sidney Porter. Some critics say that he is one of the greatest

short-story writers in American history. Porter was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on

September 11, 1862.

When Porter was three, his mother died. Porter grew up in the home of his aunt, a schoolteacher

named Evalina Porter, a strict woman who educated Porter and promoted his interest in art, literature,

and writing.

The period from 1887 to 1891 was the happiest time in Porter’s life. He and 17-year-old Athol Estes

started a family. With his wife’s support, Porter began to write stories for national magazines.

From 1898 to 1901 Porter was in prison in Columbus, Ohio. He had fourteen stories published

under various pseudonyms, but was becoming best known as «O. Henry».

When he moved to New York City to be near his publishers he wrote 381 short stories.

Porter died on June 5, 1910. He was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, North Carolina.

O. Henry stories are famous for their surprise endings. They are playful, optimistic and well known

for witty narration. Most of O. Henry’s stories are set in his own time, the early years of the 20th

century.

Among his most famous stories are: “Cabbages and Kings”, “The Four Million”, «The Gift of the

Magi», «The Cop and the Anthem», «A Retrieved Reformation», «After Twenty Years»,

«Compliments of the Season», «The Ransom of Red Chief».

Christmas is a joyful religious holiday when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The

Christmas story comes from the Bible.

A Christmas tree stands in everybody’s living room at Christmas, giving joy and happiness to

everybody. There is usually a silver star surrounded by tiny lights on the very top of the tree. Silver

bells, tinsel and sparkling lights hang on the branches. Around the base of the tree there are usually

the gifts and toys wrapped up in colourful paper. Holly is a well-known Christmas decoration today

in America

There are a lot of traditions connected with Christmas but perhaps the most important one is the

giving of present. Family members wrap up their gifts and leave them bottom of the Christmas tree to

be found on Christmas morning. Children leave sock or stocking at the end of their beds on

Christmas Eve, 24th of December, hoping that Santa Claus will come down the chimney during the

night and bring them small presents, fruit and nuts. They are usually not disappointed!
